국문 초록

  본 연구는 한국과 미국 어머니의 취업유무에 따른 유아의 전자미디어 사용 현황과 그에 대한 어머니의 인식, 개입, 요구의 특징과 차이를 비교 분석함으로써 유아와 부모를 대상으로 하는 미디어 교육의 프로그램과 정책 개발을 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하는 목적으로 수행되었다. 유아교육기관에 재원하고 있는 만 4, 5세 유아를 둔 한국과 미국어머니의 설문자료 273부를 분석한 결과 한국어머니는 취업 유무에 관계없이 미국 유아보다 TV 시청을 일찍 시작하고 오랜 시간 전자미디어를 사용하고 있으며, 한국의 전업주부들은 미국 전업주부에 비해 전자미디어의 역기능에 대한 인식도가 높았으며, 자녀 이용 지도에 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 자녀를 위한 바람직한 전자미디어 환경을 마련하기 위해 어떤 것이 가장 우선적으로 요구되는지에 대해 미국 어머니들은 부모교육을 통한 가정에서의 지도가 최우선이라고 응답한 반면, 한국 어머니들은 이것 외에 관련 법안의 마련도 시급하다고 응답하여 유의미한 차이를 보였으며, 이 차이는 한국과 미국의 전업모들의 인식에서 더욱 두드러지게 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구는 어머니의 취업유무에 따른 가정 내 유아의 전자미디어 사용의 실태와 어머니 인식의 특성 및 차이를 반영한 전자미디어 교육프로그램의 개발과 기타 양육환경의 변인과 유아의 전자 미디어 이용 간의 상호관계를 밝히는 후속연구를 제안한다.

영문 초록

  This study investigated the differences of home use of electronic media between Korean and American 4- and 5-year-old children and the types of perceptions and intervention their mothers used according to whether they were in employment. A survey was administered to 200 mothers in Korea and 370 mothers in the northeastern United States; responses were analyzed through chi-square test and t-test. The results of the study are as follows. First, Korean children use TV and computer at home for a longer time than American children. Second, Korean working mothers consider more about negative effects of electronic media use, but American working mothers believe electronic media use to be beneficial for children’s learning. Finally, most of the Korean mothers experienced difficulties in guiding their children’s electronic media use by contrast American mothers tended not to have any difficulties in making decision in relation to their children’s use of TV and computer. These results suggest the need for further research to develop media education programs that reflect the current situation in which electronic media are used by young children in the context of the family and society. In addition, the authors attempted to identify what implications current electronic media usage by young children and their parents’ demands have and what future tasks they necessitate in the field of early childhood education.
