언어영재 교사 전문성 신장의 현황과 과제

국문 초록

  본 연구는 영재교육을 담당하는 교사의 질 제고에 대한 시대적 요청에 부응하여 영재교사, 특히 언어영역 영재교사의 전문성 개념을 탐색하고, 언어영재 교사 전문성 신장을 위한 제도적 노력에는 어떠한 것들이 있는지 국내와 미국을 중심으로 고찰하며, 향후 언어영재 교사의 전문성 개발 과제와 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 논의하였다. 국내현황을 살펴보면, 다른 영역에 비하여 언어영재 교사의 전문성 신장을 위한 제도적 노력은 미흡한 실정이며, 현재 실시되고 있는 일부 언어영재 교사직무연수 프로그램의 교육과정도 언어영재 교사 전문성 개념에 비추어 볼 때 협소하다고 할 수 있고, 일부 교육청에서 실시하는 국어과 심화 연수 프로그램은 언어영재의 특성을 반영하기보다는 국어과 내용 심화에 초점을 두고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 국외 영재교사 연수 프로그램은 특정 영역에 국한되지 않고, 언어, 수학, 과학, 예술 등 전 영역이 통합되어 이루어지는 특성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 향후 언어영재 교사 전문성 신장의 과제로서, 기존 연수 프로그램의 확대 및 재편성, 국가, 지역교육청, 영재교육기관간의 연계체제 확립, 그리고 학습공동체 구축을 통한 지속적인 전문성 개발 등이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

  This study explores the meaning of teacher expertise in gifted education, especially in the area of language arts, examines the current status of professional development practices in Korea and the US, and discusses the future directions for improvement. The findings from the investigation through internet indicate that systematic and institutional efforts to improve the quality of teachers of the gifted in language arts in Korea were very limited in degree and scope. Only one district officially provided a professional development program for language arts gifted teachers, but its curriculum scope and content were highly restricted considering the conceptualization of gifted teacher expertise in language arts. Also, enrichment programs for language arts teachers currently implemented in several districts including Seoul mainly focused on content enrichment rather than reflecting on the characteristics of gifted students. On the contrary, the findings from the investigation of three major universities which provided professional development programs for gifted teachers in the US demonstrate that those programs were organized with a variety of subject areas such as language arts, math, science and/or performing arts integrated within an united curriculum system. As future directions for improving professional development, following guidelines were suggested: the extension and reorganization of the current teacher development programs; the establishment of a systematic network of national gifted research institutes, district offices of education, and gifted education institutions; and finally constant professional development through the building of learning communities and interaction among the participants.
