영문 초록

  The purpose of this study is to discuss the tartan check pattern in historical perspectives and its expression in modern fashion. The tartan check pattern was originated in the Scotland highland in the middle age and developed since then. It was used in the making of the plaid and the kilt, Scottish man"s traditional clothing. It was also used in military-look and sportswear as the woman"s clothing changed since two times of world war. The tartan check which appeared in the collections of middle 20C showed more lively and modern traits of expression by the infusion of other check and print patterns. The Burberry which symbolizes tartan check pattern reconstituted the tartan check in overall new and modernized form through the transplanting of modern sense into the traditional one. In the contemporary fashion the tartan check expressed the inner artistic form with rich color, graphic, and sense of space and structure. And its sense image also found its application in the contemporary fashion.
  Thus, the tartan check has been developed in many ways, keeping up with the changes of fashion, and today"s fashion designers use the tartan check in post-modern style beyond the conventional images of it. So the tartan check, which has been used by many fashion designers since its first appearance in the world, needs to be studied and developed continuously for it has the sustainability and limitless potentiality to prosper so that its pattern can be positively applied to fashion fabrics.
