Generally, it is discussed that Tachihara Masaaki"s beauty awareness was influenced by Yugen of Medieval Jeami. In his own chronological personal history, Tachihara wrote in his lifetime that he was of noble blood of Chosun Dynasty as well as a Japanese-Korean hybrid, hiding the fact that he was an ‘ethnic Korean in Japan.’ Most of the previous studies on his literature was made in this respect.
Years after Tachihara died, Takai Yuichi revealed that Tachihara was a Japanese-Korean of the first generation and was from a needy peasantry family, not a noble family of Chosun Dynasty, after he visited Tachihara"s hometown and made various investigations.
The author developed her discussion, focusing on what is the basis of the beauty awareness of Tachihara as a Japanese-Korean of the first generation, which has not been discussed so far. In 〈Unmelted Snow〉 by Tachihara appear often the scenery of a hometown or a temple during childhood. Having the fact in mind, the author with a view to finding out about it paid a direct visit to Bongjeong neighborhood, and made a comparison. As a result, it was found out that the scenery of Juisenji and its neighborhood depicted in his work had a close similarity to the scenery or taste of the neighborhood of Bongjeong Temple, his hometown.
The author made an inference that Tachihara"s hometownregressive beauty awareness as seen above is based on an intention to free himself from the positional disadvantage accompanying a Japanese-Korean life and guilty conscience from not being able to take off the mask of disguised identity himself. As he saw most ethnic Koreans of the same blood discriminated and in need, Tachihara could not help but feel skeptical about his identity and homesick. This homesickness and guilty conscience must have pushed him to nostalgia of his childhood. Therefore, the scenery of Gamakura Juisenji was none other than that of Bongjeong Temple, his hometown, and its nearby village.
It can be said that the sweetness of hometown during childhood sublimed into the basis of beauty awareness of Tachihara who lived a disguised life.
