Extracurricular activities are a sort of special education provided by each in야vidual school that aims at keeping pace with current requests for bringing up adults of character and creativity. Actually, individual schools are providing their own extracurricular activities, about 15 are spent.
Because they are already much burdened with lots of disciplines, however, teachers may be difficult to develop and operate any new extracurricular activity by themselves.
Thus the purpose of this is to propose ways of operating extracurricular activities for systematic reading education which can be easily utilized by teachers, especially focusing on educational play, keeping pace with reading education environments that are being more and more improved. For the purpose, this researcher used picture books as texts for educational play.
Picture books are relatively small in content, so all children can read them within a given time and share their thoughts. Because they have lots of words and illustrations for each episode, picture books can be texts best for educational play to lower-grade students.
Reading education should be given in accordance with child development stage and curricular course. as a part of the education, educational play allows lower-grade children in their concrete operational period to read books, physically express situations described in books and play a character appeared in books. The technique is also very useful in drawing out learners" creative literal reponses by using interviews wiyh so-called a bag of thoughts.
In the study, the researcher established learning objectives in associations with literal education curriculum for 2nd-grade students and selected 5 volumes of picture books as texts and utilized them in sessions whose total time was 15 hours.
The researcher reviewed theories regarding reading education, literal education curriculum, educational play and picture book, and examined ways of reading education using reading education. In addition, learning texts were decided and learning objectives and yearly instruction plans in associations with literal education curriculum were established. Then each step of educational play that can be valid in reading education was investigated. To maximize effects of the technique, further, a teaching-learning model that consists of five levels, opening, collecting, spreading, arranging and going beyond thoughts was devised and actually applied.
In the level of opening thoughts, children were induced to relax their mind and body through a variety of drama plays in association with objectives. In the level of collecting thoughts, children listened to piture books to clearly understand their contents. In the level of spreading thoughts, children were asked to express contents contained in the books through educational play in various ways. For the expression, body pieces, a picture book of body pieces and the bag of thoughts were mainly used. In the level of arranging thoughts, situations described in picture books were reorganized in relation to learning objectives. In this level, children were grouped to collaborate with each other in extending the range of thinking and developing their own imagination and creation skills. In the extracurricular activities and share information with each other.
It is often thought that educational play can be instructed only by teachers who were trained about play. Some of the technique that are already available may be applied by anyone to learning activities only if he or she learn how to use them better.
