개인의 가치성향과 두뇌활용 유형과의 관계에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 개인의 가치성향과 두뇌활용 유형과의 관계를 실증적으로 규명하였다. 개인의 가치성향은 Triandis(1995)의 연구를 기반으로 하여 개인주의-집합주의 성향으로 구분하였다. 두뇌활용유형은 Herrmann(1996)의 전뇌이론(whole brain theory)을 기반으로 하여 4가지로 나누었다. 먼저 좌뇌는 논리적 사고의 좌상뇌, 구조적 활용의 좌하뇌(좌변연계)로 구분하였으며, 다음으로 우뇌는 직관적 사고의 우상뇌, 감정적 사고의 우하뇌(우변연계)로 나누었다. 측정은 HBDI(herrmann brain dominance instrument)를 한국적 상황에 맞춰 수정 보완한 LSJI(lee sohn jeon index) 척도를 사용했다. 실증분석을 위한 자료는 중ㆍ고등학생, 대학생들과 기업체 직원들로부터 수집되었으며 전체 576부의 설문지가 분석에 활용되었다. 분석결과 개인주의-집합주의 성향이 두뇌활용과 유의미한 관계가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 개인주의 성향이 강할수록 좌뇌활용을 더 많이 하고 있으며, 집합주의 성향이 강할수록 우뇌활용을 더 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 개인주의 성향이 강할수록 논리적, 구조적 사고를 한다는 것을 말하며, 집합주의 성향이 강할수록 감정적, 직관적 사고를 많이 한다는 것을 시사하는 것이다. 개인주의-집합주의 성향이 모두 강한 다원주의자의 경우에는 두뇌활용에 있어 양뇌를 모두 활발하게 활용하는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에, 개인주의 성향이 강한 순수 개인주의자는 논리적 사고에 치우치고, 집합주의 성향만이 강한 순수 집합주의자는 감정적 사고에 치우치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 가치관이 뚜렷하지 않은 무소신자의 경우에는 두뇌활용도가 전체적으로 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 사실에 기초하여 조직관리상의 함의를 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study tried to investigate the relationship between value orientation (individualism and collectivism orientation) and brain use dominance. We tried to answer in this study to these questions as follows; Do individualists use more left brain hemisphere than collectivists? Do collectivists use more 'feeling' part of brain than individualists? Individualism and collectivism orientation were defined and measured according to Triandis(1995). For brain dominance modes we used LSJI (Lee Sohn Jeon Index) developed based on Herrmann's whole brain theory which differentiated four brain parts (HBDI): upper left brain ('fact'), lower left brain ('form'); upper right brain ('intuition'), lower brain ('feeling'). The major findings obtained from a statistical analysis of 576 respondents are as follows : First, the brain use dominance is highly related to individualism-collectivism orientation. Second, individualists tend to use more the upper left brain, which means they are more logical than collectivists. Third, collectivists tend to use more the lower right brain, which means they are more sensitive to interpersonal feeling than individualists. Fourth, people high on both individualism and collectivism ('dualist') tend to use more whole parts of brain. From these findings we can conclude that an individual's value orientation is highly related to cognitive style.
