영문 초록

The objective of this study is to analyze the imagery of the moon in two levels: the physical and the symbolic. The moon itself is a escape motif of Tyrone's struggle to escape from his past guilt. In A Moon for the Misbegotten, the motif moon becomes theme of the play in that the symbolic moon Josie saves the Tyrone's soul. Tyrone, who has been afflicted with the past, has lived upon the temporary consolation of alcohol and whores. He confesses his guilt and asks forgiveness from Josie who is the symbolic moon and the mother-substitute. He finally overcomes the guilty feeling and finds a repose for his soul. The moon motif is suggested in two ways: the physical moonlight which lights up the fall sky and the symbolic moonlight which is Josie's psychological role which saves Tyrone's dark soul. A main motif moonlight adheres closely to the theme of redemption. In the Pieta scene, the climax of the play, Josie perfectly plays the various roles of a savior, a mother-substitute, the image of all that is virtue, and the symbolic moonlight which embraces Tyrone, the symbol of the misbegotten. At last Tyrone overcomes his guilt by confessing his pains to Josie; he finally reaches the peaceful death that he has always dreamed. Like this the moon is a repeated element which itself is a key motif of the play and keeps the status of the center of the whole storyline.
