평생교육의 초기 이념을 살릴 수 있는 또 하나의 이론으로서 여성주의 교육이론

국문 초록

초기 평생교육은 인간중심적이면서 사회 평등을 지향하고 정의 실현에 많은 관심을 가졌다. 그러나 초기 평생교육의 이런 이상은 한국이 IMF를 맞게 되면서 변화하기 시작하였다. 평생교육은 한국 경제 발전의 도구로 재정의 되었고 곧 인적자원개발과 동일시되었다. 본 연구는 평생교육의 이런 방향 전환은 평생교육 자체뿐만 아니라, 한국 교육의 미래에도 바람직하지 못하다고 보고, 이에 대한 해결책은 무엇보다 평생교육의 초기의 이념을 살리는 다양한 평생교육 이론이 소개, 개발되어 평생교육 현장에서 적극적으로 실천되는 것이라고 본다. 이런 맥락에서 본 연구는 평생교육의 초기 이념을 살릴 수 있는 하나의 이론으로서 여성주의 교육이론을 소개하고자한다. 이 연구에서 관심을 갖는 여성주의 교육이론은 1986년 벨렌키, 클린치, 골드버거, 타룰이 쓴「Women's Ways of Knowing」(WWK)과 같은 저자들이 1996년 편집한「Knowledge, Difference, and Power」(KDP)로부터 발전되어 온 이론이다. 이 연구에서 여러 여성주의 교육이론 중 이 여성주의 교육이론을 소개하려고 하는 이유는 이 이론이 처음 만들어질 때에서는 지나치게 서구 중산층 여성에만 초점을 맞춤으로써 많은 문제점을 가지고 있었으나, 시간이 지남에 따라 자체 내의 성찰 과정을 거쳐 서구 중산층 여성의 관점에서 벗어나 다양한 관점을 포괄하는 통합적인 교육이론으로 거듭났기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Lifelong education in Korea is faced with crisis as lifelong education has been redefined as a tool of economic development right after the Korean economic crisis in 1997. Since then, lifelong education has been identified with human resource development. This study stresses that the current trend of identifying lifelong education with human resource development is not good for the future of lifelong education and Korean education in general. Also, the study suggests a solution to the problem, which is to introduce or develop diverse theories to realize the ideals of early lifelong education. These diverse theories could contribute to balancing off the human resource development paradigm and to realizing ideal aspects of early lifelong education. In particular, in this study, one feminist education theory developed by Belenky, Clinchy, Goldberger, and Tarule is introduced and investigated to find out in what aspects the feminist education theory works as a theory to realize the ideal aspects of early lifelong education. This feminist education theory has been developed based on two books, 「Women's Ways of Knowing」and「Knowledge, Difference, and Power」. When 「Women's Ways of Knowing」was first published in 1986, it drew so much attention. But soon it also received many criticisms. In response to the criticisms, the authors of the book, 「Women's Ways of Knowing」 wrote another book, 「Knowledge, Difference, and Power」in 1996. In this new book, the authors modestly admitted the problems they had with 「Women's Ways of Knowing」and corrected them and even revised some major aspects of their theory. As a result, this feminist education theory becomes richer and more comprehensive enough to realize some ideals of early lifelong education and to restore some important values of lifelong education, lost in the predominance of the human resource development paradigm.
