국문 초록

동아시아를 문화적 공동체로 이해하는 논의의 정당성은 동아시아가 공유한 문화적 과제에 있으며 이 과제는 19세기말 동아시아가 서양 문명과 대면하면서부터 구체화 되었다. 동아시아의 전통을 포기하지 않은 채 서양 열강의 무력과 새로운 사조에 저항하고자 고심하면서 동아시아는 통도서기(東道西器), 화혼양재(和塊洋才), 중체서용(中體西用)이라는 논리로 무장 한다. 이들 논의는 동양과 서양 정신과 물질이라는 이분법적 틀을 통해 부분적으로 서양을 받아들여서 서양을 넘어서고자 하는 의지를 담고 있었다. 그러나 동도서기론이 동도와 서기를 어떻게 이해했는지, 그 이해는 정확한 것이었는지 제대로 검토되지 못했다. 세계화시대의 동아시아론도 이런 동도서기론에서 크게 벗어나 있지 못하다는 것이 이글의 문제의식이다. 이달에서는 동도서기론을 비판적으로 분석하고 있는 논의들을 통해 세계화 시대 타문명의 이해와 수용의 방식을 모색하였다. 이제까지의 논의가 타문명과의 대결이나 융합이라는 적극적인 배척이나 수용의 자세만을 논해왔다면 이 글이 제시하는 대안은 문화번역으로서, 대결이나 수용의 태도 이전에 타문명을 이해하는 방식이다. 문화번역은 동화적이고 토착적인 번역방식에서 벗어나 낯선 것을 낯선 것으로 보여줌으로써 고유의 문화적 지평을 확장하고자 하는 새로운 번역론의 변화에 기대어 있으며, 특히 부분이나 요소의 단편적인 이해가 아니라 타문화를 전체체계로서 이해하는 방식을 말한다.

영문 초록

The discourse and the legitimacy thereof in understanding East Asia as a cultural community depends largely on the cultural tasks its shares The tasks began when East Asia met the West at the end of the 19th century. East Asia then responded to the western power equipped with modern science and technology by arming itself with a theory of "Dondosoegi," "Ti-yong formula," and others. Dongdosoegl is divided Do (dao in Chinese) into Eastern and Western Do, and culture into spiritual and matter. While arguing that East Asia should be superior to the West from the spiritual viewpoint, it understands that it is inferior to the West in material issues. But Dongdosoegi formula lacks a close inquiry on what "Eastern-spirit" and "Western-matter" are. This essay will delve into the underlying rationale and the details of Dongdosoegi and attempts to overcome its dichotomy between the East and the West as well as between spirit and matter. It will also suggests an alternative way of cultural understanding in the globalization era -namely the "cultural translation." According to the cultural translation, translation should not be that of acclimatizing other cultures into one's own; rather, it is an effort to show others' different cultures as they are. In this way one can broaden one's cultural horizon and understand others' cultures in toto.
