원화 환율의 변동성 추이에 관한연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 외환위기 이후 우리 경제의 환율제도 운용을 환율변동성의 변 화를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 외환위기 이후 그 이전에 비해 원화 환율의 변동성이 상당히 증가하였으며, 정부의 외환시장 개입 정도도 외환위기 이전과 비교하여 크게 낮아진 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 이러한 변화는 완전변동환율제를 채택하고 있는 다른 나라 수준에는 미치지 못하는 것으로, 이는 우리 경제가 사실상 완전한 변동환율제로 운용되지는 않았음을 반영한다고 하겠다. 원화 환율의 대외연계성 추이를 분석하여 본 결과 우리 경제의 환율은 아직도 달러에 연동하여 움직이는 경향이 매우 강한 것으로 나타났다. 자산 시장모형에 의하여 원화 환율결정식을 추정한 결과 위기 이후 주요 거시경제 변수들이 원화 환율에 영향을 미치는 영향이 커졌으며, 환율이 장기균형을 회복하는 속도가 더욱 빨라진 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Since the recent financial crisis, the Korean exchange rate regime has been dramatically changed. The volatility of the exchange rate has been significantly larger. It is also believed that the intervention of the government in the exchange market is considerably lowered. In this paper, we analyze if these changes imply that the current exchange rate regime is close to the floating exchange rate regime. We find that, while the volatility of the Won/Dollar exchange rate is much higher than before the crisis, it is still lower than that of the exchange rates of other countries adopting the floating exchange rate regime. Also the movements of the exchange rate still indicate that the value of the Korean won is predominantly linked to that of the U.S. dollar, while the influence of the Japanese yen is expanding. Additional analyses suggest, however, that the movements of the exchange rate increasingly reflect changes in macroeconomic variables after the crisis.
