영문 초록

Unions demand a wage increase on the basis of living costs of workers. In this regard, the life-cycle living costs is an important factor to decide the wage level. This study attemps to calculate the life-cycle living costs of workers in Korea. The data in this study was gathered by a nation-wide living costs survey which was conducted by the Federation of Korean Trade Unions in 1995. Major findings are as follows; 1) The livings costs of workers rises through 50s before it drops a little. 2) The gap between the minimum living costs and the standard living costs is around 300,000 won and it is rather fixed in all age levels. 3) The life-cycle wage curve rises through mid-40s before it drops. 4) The life-cycle living costs curve exceeds the life-cycle wage curve in all age levels except the first half of 20s. 5) Workers should do overtime-work to supplement their fixed income. But total income is still below the standard living costs after mid-30s. 6) Workers experience deficit in their family budget after mid-30s. The amount of deficit is around 300,000 won at 50. 7) Workers of large scale companies can maintain the surplus in their family bud-get, but workers of small scale companies experience deficit in their family budget in all age levels. 8) White-collar workers can maintain the balance in their family budget through mid-40s before they experience dificit. Blue-collar workers experience deficit in all age levels. 9) Unions should change the basis of wage-hike damand from the average living costs to the life-cycle living costs.
