영문 초록

This paper first examined the background of a rise of and characteristics of the New Growth Theory(or Endogenous Growth Model : EGM), which has been quite popular and at the same time controversial in the past few years, within the context of the general growth theory. Then, we looked into various literatures which treat applications of this new theory in the cases of Asian NICs as well as those of developed countries. They seem to verify the usefulness of the new theory particularly in explaining the growth of Asian NICs. Thus, the next task was to apply this new theory in the case of ASEAN countries which also have been growing rapidly in recent years. The statistical results generally support the hypothesis that export growth, which seems to raise the technical level of a country by allowing the imports of higher technology or by allowing imports of capital goods that embody higher technology, contributes to the economic growth. In fact, it was found that the contribution of export growth was about six times greater in the whole period since the mid-1970s and about ten times greater since 1986 when these ASEAN countries have begun emphasizing export-oriented growth strategy, than that of the physical capital formation. However, it is noted that this model more or less ignores the role of human capital formation largely because of a lack of relevant data, and that this model may have a multicollinearity problem in testing. Improvement of a medel, for instance in a direction of simultaneous, structural equations, is certainly desired.
