국문 초록

소위 지각조직화의 원리를 심리학 개론서들이 어떻게 다루는지를 보기 위해서 미국에서 발간된 개론서 15종과 한국의 개론서 3종을 살펴본 결과 기술이 애매하고 혼동을 주는 경우가 많음이 밝혀졌다. 이런 문제는 주로 집단화와 조직화간에 엄격한 구분을 하지 못하고 이들 원리들이 집단화 형태선호를, 그리고 완결과 같은 조직화의 다른 측면을 다룬다는 사실을 분명히 인식하지 못하는 데서 기인하는 것으로 파악되었다. Wertheimer(1923) 자신이 제시한 7개의 원리 중 근접, 유사, 그리고 공동운명은 집단화를, 폐쇄(완결과 구분되는), 좋은 형태, 심태, 그리고 과거경험은 형태선호를 다룬다. 완결은 또 다른 측면을 다룬다. 교과서가 범하는 흔한 오류는 형태선호를 나타내는 원리들을 집단화로 해석하는 것인데, 이는 “무엇이든 형태로서 파악되는 것은 집단화를 나타낸다”라는 필자가 집단화오류라고 부르는 추리착오에서 기인한다. 흔히 좋은 형태의 부분원리로 간주되는 상칭, 단순, 그리고 규칙성은 시각적인 원형(prototype)이라는 개념으로 대치할 것을 제안했다. 사회심리학에서 다루는 조직원리들에 대해서도 비슷한 분석을 가하는 것이 필요하다.

영문 초록

The present study reviewed 18 different introductory psychology textbooks, 15 American and 3 Korean for their treatment of the principles of perceptual organization. It was found that their descriptions were in many cases vague and confusing. The problem arose mainly from their failure to make a fine distinction between grouping and organization and to recognize explicitly the different aspects of organization the principles dealt with, namely grouping, figure preference, and completion. The writer's analysis showed that of the 7 principles described by Wertheimer (1923), proximity, similarity, and common fate qualify as the principles of grouping whereas the rest, namely closedness (as distinct from closure), good figure, set, and familiarity/experience are best describable as the principles of figure preference. Closure comprises the third distinct category. Many textbooks erred by describing the second category of principles, most notably continuation and good figure, as principles of grouping rather than of figure preference. These misrepresentations had their root in what the writer called "the grouping fallacy," a faulty thinking that "whatever that is grasped as a figure demonstrates grouping." It was proposed that symmetry, simplicity, and regularity, the dimensions or part principles of good figure, be replaced by visual prototype. This analysis points up a need for making similar analyses regarding many principles of organization (e.g., balance, consistency, dissonance, strain toward symmetry) currently found in social psychology.
