최소주의와 최대주의 관점에서 음악사적 접근

국문 초록

중세 초, 종교적 용도의 절제되고 최소화된 성가, 즉 좁은 음역에서 반복이 잦은 무반주 단성(單聲) 성가에서 최소주의 음악의 근거를 찾을 수 있다. 세월이 지나면서 점점 최대화하는 음악적 경향에 대한 반작용으로 최소주의 음악의 현대적 특징이 나타나기 시작했다. 최대화하려는 음악적 관성을 거부한 에릭 사티는 종교적인 명상이나 신비 또는 심리적 반응을 지향함으로써 최소주의 음악어법을 제시했다. 20세기 이후 최소주의 음악은 ‘새로운 음향’과 ‘심리적 감상’이란 새로운 영역으로 발전하게 되었고 한 장르로 자리 잡았다. ‘음악의 진화’라는 관점에서는 ‘음악의 최대화’가 당연하고 자연스럽게 보인다. 최대주의 음악은 한마디로 점점 커지는 연주 홀의 규모와 더불어 진화·발전했다고 할 수 있다. 연주 홀과 연주단의 규모에 어울리도록 음량과 악상의 범위는 넓어졌고 음향은 더 풍성해졌다. 최대화하는 음악에 어울리는 화성, 선율, 관현악법, 형식 등 장황해진 음악을 이끌어갈 새로운 기법도 덩달아 최대화되었다. 최대주의 경향은 오랜 세월 정립된 선율과 화성, 형식 등 음악의 진행 논리와 더불어 음향 효과 발전에 학문적·예술적으로 공헌했다. 최소주의 음악은 감상자의 내면 상태에 접근함으로써 전혀 새로운 감상 태도를 제시했고 기층 정서는 물론 현대의 세분된 정서도 아우른다는 의미가 있다.

영문 초록

Minimalism can be traced from the restrained chants for religious purposes in the Middle Ages, a cappella monophony that is repeated in narrow ranges. It began as a reaction to the increasingly maximizing musical trend to represent the modern characteristics of minimal music. Rejecting maximizing musical inertia, Eric Satie suggested minimal music by aiming for religious meditation, mystery or psychological reaction. Since the 20th century, minimal music has developed into new areas such as ‘new sound' and ‘psychological appreciation' and has established itself as a genre. From the perspective of 'the evolution of music', 'the maximization of music' seems natural. In a word, maximal music evolved and developed with the growing size of the concert hall. The range of volume and music has expanded to match the size of the concert hall and the orchestra, and the sound consequentially has become richer. New techniques that will lead lengthy music such as harmony, melody, orchestration technique, and musical form have also been maximized to match the music. Maximalism has contributed academically and artistically to the development of the logic and sound effects of music that have been established for a long time. Since minimal music approaches the inner state of the listener, it presents a completely new attitude of appreciation, and it is meaningful that it encompasses not only basic emotions but also detailed emotions.
