청각장애 아동을 위한 비주얼 파닉스 효과와 활용 가능성 탐색

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 우리나라에서 청각장애 아동 대상 비주얼 파닉스의 활용 가능성을 탐색하기 위하여, 국내외 비주얼 파닉스 문헌을 분석하고 우리나라에서 사용할 수 있는 비주얼 파닉스 손기호를 제안하고자 하였다. 비주얼 파닉스(visual phonics)는 음소를 손의 모양과 움직임으로 시각적으로 표현하여 청각장애 아동이 음소의 음가를 변별하도록 고안된 시각적이고 운동․감각적으로 표현한 다감각적 체계이다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청각장애 아동을 대상으로 한 비주얼 파닉스 선행연구들은 비주얼 파닉스 활용이 청각장애 아동의 음운인식, 조음중재와 문해지도에 효과적이라고 하였다. 둘째, 우리나라 자음 비주얼 파닉스 손기호는 한국수어 지문자를 기본으로 하되 조음위치와 조음방법을 함께 표현하는 방법으로 제안하였다. 한국수어 지문자를 기본적으로 제안한 이유는 우리나라의 자음 글자는 음성학적 특성을 고려하여 창제되었으며, 지문자 역시 한글의 모양과 상당히 유사하여 한국 자음 지문자가 비주얼 파닉스 손기호 모양으로 사용되는 것이 적절하다는 것을 발견하였기 때문이다. 향후 비주얼 파닉스를 활용한 다양한 중재연구가 필요함을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study was implemented to identify the effect of visual phonics and propose visual phonics hand cues that can be used in Korea to explore the possibility of using visual phonics for children with DHH(Deaf and Hard of Hearing). Visual phonics is a multisensory system designed to help DHH children discriminate the sound of phonemes by visually expressing phonemes through the shape and movement of the hand. For the study, researchers reviewed domestic and foreign visual phonics-related literature and proposed a visual phonics manual that fits the characteristics of the Korean language. The results are as follows. First, previous studies on visual phonics targeting DHH children have shown that the use of visual phonics is effective in phonological awareness, articulation intervention, and literacy instruction in DHH children. Second, visual phonics hand cues differ from country to country. In the United States, the place of articulation and method of articulation are expressed through the shape and movement of the hand cues corresponding to the 46 English phonemes. There are many hand cues that are similar to the American Sign Language fingerspelling, and hand cues that are different from the American Sign Language fingerspelling are also used. Cue signs are used in Japan. Korea’s consonant letters were created with phonetic characteristics, and the Korean Sign Language fingerspelling are also quite similar to the shape of Korean character(Hangul), so it was found that it is appropriate for Korean consonant fingerspelling to be used as visual phonics hand symbol shapes. Therefore, when proposing the Korean visual phonics hand cue, we proposed a method of expressing the place of articulation and method of articulation using fingerspelling like the American visual phonics hand cue.
