진주지역 형평운동 관련 장소의 위치 검토

국문 초록

일제강점기의 형평운동은 진주에서 시작되어 전국으로 확산된 백정 신분 해방운동으로 우리나라 인권운동의 효시로 평가되어 교과서에도 수록된 사회운동이다. 이 운동이 어떻게 발생하고, 전개되었는지는 형평운동 연구에서 있어 매우 중요한 주제이다. 따라서 형평운동의 배경이 되는 ‘백정 동석 예배 사건’과 ‘진주 백정의 세거지 문제’, 형평사가 처음 창립하는 과정에서 장소로 제공되었던 ‘진주청년회관’과 창립축하식이 열렸던 ‘진주좌’는 진주 형평운동연구에서 빠뜨릴 수 없는 핵심주제이자 장소이다. 그럼에도 지금까지 자료 부족과 오해 등으로 ‘주요장소’를 제대로 밝혀내지 못한 상황이다. 본 글은 이러한 장소의 위치 비정과 모습 복원 문제를 해소하기 위하여 지금까지 공개된 다양한 기록자료와 지도, 사진 자료들을 수집, 비교하여 ‘백정 동석 예배 사건’이 발생하였던 옛 진주교회의 위치를확인하고, 유일하게 전해지는 진주 백정가옥의 위치를 규명하였다. 또 그동안 잘못 비정된 진주청년회관의 위치를 새롭게 밝혀내었고, 일제강점기 집회장이었던 진주좌의 변천 과정을 구체적으로 밝혀내었다. 이러한 성과는 향후 진주 역사와 형평운동 연구를 넘어서 근대도시 복원 사업, 도시경관 사업 등의기초자료가 될 것으로 생각한다.

영문 초록

The Hyeongpyeong movement in Japanese colonial era is a the liberation movement of Baek-jeong's status that began in Jinju and spread across the country. And It is evaluated as the beginning of the human rights movement in Korea and is included in textbooks. Therefore, how this movement occurred and developed in Jinju area is a very important topic. The “Worship with Baek-jeong Case”, the “Baek-jeong’s Settlement Problem”, the “Jinju Young Men’s Hall”, which was provided as a place during the first establishment of Hyeongpyeong-sa, and “Jinju-jwa”, where the foundation ceremony was held, are key themes and places that cannot be left out of the research on the Hyeongpyeong movement in Jinju. Nevertheless, so far, the “main places” have not been properly identified due to lack of data and misunderstanding. To solve the problem of restoring the location and appearance of these places, This article identified the location of the old Jinju Church, where the “Worship with Baek-jeong case” occurred, and the location of the Baek-jeong’s house, which was passed down only, by collecting and comparing various records, maps, and photographs released so far. In addition, This article newly revealed the location of Jinju Young Men’s Hall, which has been incorrectly specified, and specifically revealed the transition process of Jinju-jwa during the Japanese colonial era. In the future, These achievements are expected to serve as basic data for modern city restoration projects and urban landscaping projects beyond research on the history of Jinju and Hyeongpyeong movement.
