회의주의자의 논증방식 - 아그립파의 tropos를 중심으로 -

국문 초록

본 논문은 아그립파의 tropos를 통해, 회의주의자가 어떻게 독단적 믿음을 논박하고 판단유보에 이르는지 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 회의주의적 tropos에 관한 문헌적 전거를 면밀히 분석하고 현대 연구자들의 해석을 비판적으로 검토함으로써 우리는 다음 결론에 도달한다. 현대의 많은 해석자들은 상대성 논증과 의견 대립 논증을 아그립파의 tropos에서 제외하고 (인식적 정당화를 논박하는) trilemma로 한정해서 이해했으며, 다양한 회의주의적 tropos 사이의 상호 연관성을 간과한 채 인식적 정당화를 논박하는 논증만을 따로 떼어 설명함으로써 회의주의적 tropos의 본래 의도를 왜곡했다. 하지만 의견 대립 논증과 상대성 논증은 회의주의적 tropos의 사족이 아니라 핵심 축이다. 한편 Barnes는 회의주의자를 (독단주의자에 맞서 싸우는) 검투사에 비유하면서 회의주의적 tropos를 상대방을 옭아맬 그물에 비유했다. 하지만 회의주의자는 독단주의자를 죽이기보다는 살리고자 하며, 회의주의적 tropos는 독단적 자만과 성급함을 치유하기 위한 치료제이다. 의사가 환자의 증상에 따라 다양한 약을 혼합해서 처방하듯, 회의주의자는 독단주의자가 무엇을 어떻게 주장하느냐에 따라 다양한 방식으로 tropos를 결합해서 독단주의를 치유한다. 회의주의자도 한때는 대상세계의 참, 거짓을 파악해야만 마음의 평안을 얻을 수 있을 것이라고 기대했지만, 서로 상반된 주장들 사이의 의견 대립을 해소할 수 없었으므로 판단을 유보했고 그 결과 마음의 평안을 얻게 되었다. 회의주의자는 자신의 독단적 믿음을 치유한 회의주의적 tropos를 활용해서 독단주의자의 자만과 성급함을 치유하고자 한다. 이렇게 볼 때 회의주의적 tropos는 모든 이의 독단적 믿음을 치유하는 치료제이며, 이를 통해 회의주의자 자신뿐 아니라 독단주의자도 판단유보와 마음의 평안에 도달한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to explain how the Sceptics refute an Dogmatic belief and lead to epoche, analyzing Agrippa’s modes. Going over critically literatures on the five modes of Agrippa and interpretations of modern scholars, we will get the following conclusions. Many scholars exclude from Agrippa’s tropes the mode of relativity, considering it as an Dogmatical argument. Some scholars limit Agrippa’s tropes to trilemma, excluding the mode of relativity and that of dissent. Others distort the intention of the Sceptical modes, overlooking the relation among the sceptical tropes(i.e. Aenesidemus' modes, Agrippa’s modes, the two modes, eight modes against causal explanations) and focusing only on the modes against epistemic justification. Nevertheless, relativity and dissent are two axes of the Sceptical modes. Many scholars including J. Barnes compare the Sceptical modes to net in which the Sceptical gladiators entangle their Dogmatic opponents. However, Sceptics are not gladiators but physicians, while the Sceptical modes are prescriptions curing the Dogmatic conceit and rashness. Just as doctors give remedies to patients mixing various medicines, so do the Sceptics cure Dogmatic beliefs combining the Sceptical modes in various ways. Sceptics once hoped that they could become tranquil apprehending which are true and which are false. But they came upon equipollent dispute, and being unable to decide this they suspended judgement. When they suspended judgement, tranquility followed fortuitously. Sceptics tried to cure the Dogmatic conceit and rashness, using the Sceptical modes which cured their own Dogmatic belief. Therefore, the Sceptical modes are therapy for all, with the aid of which everyone (including the Dogmatics and the Sceptics) arrives at epoche and ataraxia.
