칸트에서 목적론적 판단력의 이율배반 - 규제적 원리들 사이의 상충 -

국문 초록

이 논문은 칸트의 『판단력비판』2부 ‘목적론적 판단력 비판’, ‘변증학’에 등장하는 ‘판단력의 이율배반’의 문제를 다룬다. ‘목적론적 판단력의 이율배반’의 논쟁적인 주제들 중 하나는 이 이율배반이 무엇의 상충으로 발생하는가이다. 논문은 칸트가 ‘변증학’에서 해결하고자 의도한 진정한 판단력의 이율배반은 반성적 판단력의 규제적 원리들로서 기계론과 목적론의 상충임을 주장한다. 목적론적 판단력의 이율배반은 우리의 판단력이 유기체와 같은 특수한 대상들과 관련한 경험법칙들을 체계화하고 그것들을 포섭할 상위의 법칙을 찾고자 할 때 발생한다. 이와 같은 상황에서 작동하는 판단력은 규정적 판단력이 아닌 반성적 판단력이며, 반성적 판단력은 순수 지성법칙들로 규정되지 않은, 우리 지성에 대해서는 우연적인 자연에 대해 하나의 통일된 자연, 하나의 일관된 체계적 경험이 가능하도록 법칙적 통일성을 가정하고, 자연의 합목적성의 원리에 따라 판정한다. 판단력의 이율배반 논의를 시작하는 §§69~70은 이 점을 분명히 하고 있다. 따라서 기계론과 목적론을 반성적 판단력의 규제적 원리들로 취하는 것은 이율배반의 해결책이 아니며, 오히려 그것이 칸트가 진정으로 다루고자 했던 이율배반이다. 그러나 §70과 §71의 일부 구절들은 칸트가 다루려는 이율배반이 규정적 판단력의 구성적 원리들 사이의 상충이고, 반성적 판단력의 규제적 원리들 사이에는 외양(Anschein)과 달리 이율배반이 없다는 해석을 가능하게 한다. 나는 텍스트에 근거하여, 문제의 구절들에서 ‘상충(Widerstreit)’과 ‘모순(Widerspruch)’의 개념을 구분하고, ‘이율배반’(§§69~78) 논의를 두 단계로 보는 해석적 대안을 제시함으로써, 목적론적 판단력의 이율배반이 규제적 원리들 사이의 상충으로 이해되어야 함을 옹호한다.

영문 초록

This paper deals with the Antinomy of the Power of judgment in the Critique of the Teleological Power of Judgment, Part II of Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment. One of the controversial issues concerning the Antinomy of the Teleological Power of Judgment is what on earth are conflicting in the antinomy. I argue that the true antinomy of the power of judgment which Kant intended to resolve in the Dialectic is the conflict between mechanism and teleology, both being regulative principles of the reflective power of judgment. The antinomy of the teleological power of judgment occurs when our power of judgment seeks to systematize empirical laws about particular objects, such as organisms, and to find out a higher-order law under which those empirical laws are to be subsumed. Herein, the power of judgment at work is reflective, not determinative. The reflective power of judgment judges according to the principle of the purposiveness of nature, which presupposes a lawful unity that allows for a unity of nature, a thoroughly correlated systematic experience of what is contingent for human, undetermined nature by pure laws of the understanding. This point is made clear in §§69~70, where the antinomy of the power of judgment is first introduced. Thus, taking mechanism and teleology as the regulative principles of the reflective power of judgment is not a solution to the antinomy, but rather the very conflict that Kant was trying to address. Unfortunately, some passages in §70 and §71 seem misleading enough to support the interpretation that the antinomy Kant is dealing with is a conflict between the constitutive principles of the determinative power of judgment and accordingly, contrary to appearance(Anschein), there is no conflict between the regulative principles of the reflective power of judgment. To show that the antinomy of the teleological power of judgment is a conflict between the regulative principles, I proposes an interpretive alternative that distinguishes between the concepts of conflict(Widerstreit) and contradiction(Widerspruch) in the passages in question, and reads the discussion of the Antinomy(§§69-78) as a two-step process, as well as presenting textual evidence.
