미술교육에서 비주얼 저널의 가치와 활용

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 비주얼 저널을 실제 미술교육 현장에 적용하기 위한 기초 연구로써 비주얼 저널의 개념과 특징, 비주얼 저널에 관한 국내․외 선행연구에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 비주얼 저널의 미술교육적 가치와 활용 방안을 밝히는 데 있다. 분석 결과 비주얼 저널은 첫째, 창의적 표현을 확장하게 하는 데 도움을 주며, 둘째, 시각적 이미지로서 소통할 수 있고, 셋째, 다양한 학문 간의 융합을 촉진하며, 넷째, 학습자의 경험에 대한 실제적이고 종합적인 이해를 가능하게 하고, 다섯째, 학습자 중심의 수업을 가능하게 한다는 점에서 미술교육적 가치가 있다. 이러한 비주얼 저널은 미술교육 현장에서 크게 주제 중심의 비주얼 저널 작성, 내면적 소통을 위한 비주얼 저널 작성, 자기 성찰적 비주얼 저널 작성의 세 가지 방향으로 활용될 수 있다. 이때, 교사는 학습자들이 형식에 구애받지 않고 비주얼 저널을 창작할 수 있도록 해야 하며, 학습자의 내면적 의사소통을 돕고, 자신의 삶 속에서 비주얼 저널의 주제를 찾을 수 있도록 이끌며 학습자의 비주얼 저널을 수용하는 태도를 지녀야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study examines the values and practical uses of visual journals for art education. The values derived from the literature review and preceding research analysis are as follows. First, the visual journal creates a learning environment that challenges students to express themselves creatively. Second, students can learn how to convey their feelings and thoughts as visual images while keeping their visual journals. Third, the visual journal expands the concept of drawing and promotes interdisciplinary approaches. Fourth, the visual journal enables a practical and comprehensive understanding of the experience and supports students to improve their meta-cognitive skills. Fifth, the visual journal enables student-centered bottom-up art lessons. Based on the values of the visual journal in art education, I suggested three practical uses of visual journals in art education depending on the various purposes and contexts; topic-oriented visual journaling, communicational visual journaling, and self-reflective visual journaling. In the process of utilizing visual journals in education, teachers should play the following roles to maximize the effectiveness of visual journal education. First of all, teachers should guide students to express themselves freely. Also, teachers should support students to discover the topics of visual journals from their lives. The other role of teachers should be a facilitator to help students’ inner-communication. Lastly, teachers should be receptive to the stories and expressions contained in the students’ visual journals.
