초등학교 이중언어강사의 학교생활에 대한 질적연구: 어려움과 대응, 이점을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 질적접근에 기초하여 초등학교 이중언어 강사들의 학교생활의 어려움과 그 대응 및 이점에 대해 살펴보았다. 연구결과에 따르면, 초등학교 이중언어 강사들은 업무적, 사회적, 제도적 차원에서 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 업무적으로는, 적절한 교재 부재와 명확한 예산의 부족, 연수 배제와 연수 기회의 제한, 사무 처리와 언어적 곤란, 업무 한계의 모호와 과다 등으로 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 또 사회적으로는, 비정규직이라는 소속의 모호함과 그에 따른 처신의 어려움, 물리적·사회적 고립, 동료 및 기관 간 업무 협조 부재, 낯선 학교내 조직문화 적응에 대한 어려움을 경험하고 있었다. 끝으로 제도적으로는, 고용 불안정과 저임금 및 일방적 행정 처리와 무계획성에 힘들어하고 있었다. 그러나 이에 반해, 이들은 제도권 진입과 양호한 근무여건이라는 점에서 현재의 직업에 만족을 표하고 있었으며, 화이트 칼라 동료와 인간적 교류를 할 수 있다는 점을 높이 사고 있었다. 아울러 교사에 대한 한국 사회의 높은 사회적 인식 속에서 이주민으로서 한국사회에서 교사로 일할 수 있다는 것에서 보람과 자긍심을 느끼고 있었다. 이상의 논의를 기초로 이중언어 강사 제도와 다문화교육에 관한 문제점과 개선점에 대해 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This qualitative study examined the difficulties and advantages of bilingual teachers’ school life in Korean elementary schools. According to the results, the difficulty of bilingual teachers’ school life can be divided into three areas: Task difficulties, social difficulties, and institutional difficulties. First, looking at task difficulties, bilingual teachers were not only troubled by a lack of proper teaching materials for various multicultural students and lessons, caused by an absence of a multicultural budget, but also by the limited allowance for teachers training programs, the fuzzy boundary between education and business, and a heavy workload, among other issues. In regards to social difficulties, bilingual teachers experienced hardships due to having the ambiguous job description of non-regular workers in the workplace, experiencing social isolation from colleagues, enduring noncooperation with other teachers or administrative officers, and dealing with unfamiliar traditional practices inside the school. Finally, from an institutional standpoint, they went through a time of employment instability, received a small salary, and experienced a one-sided arbitrary administrative order. On the other hand, bilingual teachers were satisfied with the working environment of the school, such as regular commuting and the long holidays and vacations. Furthermore, they thought highly of the fact that they met and interacted with highly-educated counterparts in the school. Some of them, also, appreciated the opportunity that they could work in the school as teachers and put meaning in that they achieved their dream in Korean society.
