비판 이론의 심급으로서의 새로운 화용론 연구

국문 초록

비판이론의 전통에 속한 이론가들은 이론이 현실을 담아내지 못하고 현저한 괴리를 드러낼 때 과감하게 그 이론의 권위를 문제 삼고 새로운 이론을 모색하는 것을 주저하지 않았다. 화용론과 관련해 하버마스 역시 비판 정신에 따라 전통에 얽매이지 않고 현실을 설명하는 시도를 수행한 것이라 평가할 수 있다. 곧 그는 의사소통을 비판이론의 핵심적 기반으로 삼고 독백적인 의식철학을 벗어나 상호주관적으로 소통하는 패러다임을 정립한 후 과감하게 언어적 전환(linguistic turn)을 수용하고 그 전환을 구체화하기 위해 다양한 화용론적 시도들과의 논의에 적극적으로 뛰어든다. 그 결과 그는 선험 화용론에서 출발해서 보편 화용론을 거쳐 형식 화용론(formal pragmatics)으로 논의를 점차 정교화해 나가게 된다. 이로써 비판이론은 그 이전에는 예상치도 못했던 새로운 분야인 화용론과 만나게 되었고 그 결과로서 의사소통을 패러다임으로 하는 새로운 비판 철학을 수립할 수 있었다. 그러나 화용론은 하버마스가 비판이론의 방법론으로 가다듬는 과정에서 흥미롭게도 또 다른 실천 이론 전통에서 비슷한 관심을 받고 있었다. 이러한 점에서 볼 때 하버마스는 어쩌면 비판이론이 전통에 매여 놓칠 수도 있었던 화용론이라는 현대의 주요한이론적 성과를 공유할 수 있는 길을 비판이론에 열어 주었다고 볼 수 있다. 이제 관건은 비판이론이 이 같은 성과를 앞으로 어떻게 더 발전시켜 나갈 것인가 하는점에 있다 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Theorists belonging to the tradition of critical theory did not hesitate to boldly question the authority of the theory and seek a new theory when the theory failed to capture reality and revealed a significant gap. Regarding pragmatics, Habermas can also be evaluated as an attempt to explain reality without being bound by tradition according to the spirit of criticism. He took communication as the core foundation of his critical theory and established a paradigm of intersubjective communication out of monologue philosophy of consciousness and then he boldly accepted a linguistic turn and made various pragmatic attempts to materialize the turn. As a result, he started from the theory of transcendental pragmatics, went through the theory of universal pragmatics, and gradually elaborated the discussion to the theory of formal pragmatics. As a result, critical theory met with pragmatics, a new field that was unexpected before, and a new critical philosophy with communication as a paradigm was established. Interestingly, however, pragmatics has become the focus of similar endeavors in another practical theory tradition as Habermas refines it as a methodology of critical theory. From this point of view, Habermas can be seen as opening up a way for critical theory to share the major theoretical achievement of modern times, pragmatics, which could have been missed due to the tradition of critical theory. The key now is how critical theory will further develop these achievements in the future.
