국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 삼론종의 대표적인 교설인 3중이제설과 4중이제설의 전체 구조와 의미를 종합적으로 살펴보는 것이다. 이 이론들은 삼론종의 핵심 이원적 범주들 가운데 하나인 ‘단복(單複)’의 원리를 적용하여, 3중의 이제 혹은 4중의 이제를 중층적으로 쌓아 올린 이론이다. 그런데 이와 같은 중층적 이제설은 하나의 의미로 고정되지 않고 맥락에 따라 여러 다양한 의미와 목적으로 호환될 수 있다. 본고에서는 길장의 『이제의』, 『법화현론』에 나타난 3중이제설과 그의 후기작인 『중관론소』, 『십이문론소』에 나타난 4중이제설에 관한 해석을 중심으로, 중층적 이제설이 내포한 의미를 총 여섯 가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 중층적 이제설의 개별 의미를 전체 구조와 맥락 속에서 인식할 때, 비로소 각각의 의미와 용법이 다른 의미와의 관계 속에서 온전히 드러난다. 따라서 중층적 이제설의 복합적 층위들을 고찰하기 위해 이러한 구조적 분석이 필수적이며, 이를 통해 삼론종의 교설을 심층적으로 이해할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive examination of the Three Levels of the Two Truths (三重二諦) theory and the Four Levels of the Two Truths (四重二諦) theory, which are considered the most representative doctrines of the Sanlun School. These theories are developed through the philosophy of “danfu” (單複)—single-layered and multi-layered—one of the main dualistic frameworks of the School. Specifically, the various levels of the Two Truths theory make use of the multi-layered approach with three or four stages stacked on top of each other, accumulating concepts and conclusions from the previous stages. It is worth noting that these multilayered two truths theories are not fixed with a single meaning but instead can be compatible with various meanings and purposes, depending on context. In accordance with Jizang’s explanation, this paper divides the meaning of these theories into six distinct categories (e.g., based on various audiences, scripture passages, etc.), with a particular focus on the Three Levels of the Two Truths theory (appearing in Jizang’s Erdi yi and Fahua xuanlun) and the Four Levels of the Two Truths theory (appearing in his later works, Zhongguanlun shu and Shiermenlun shu). By recognizing the each meaning of the theory in the context of all six versions together, this paper asserts that the separate uses of the theory can be fully revealed, and their implications can be better understood in relation to the other uses. The structural analysis of these theories is essential in uncovering their layers of complexity, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of the Sanlun School’s teachings.
