국내 취업 외국인 유학생의 소프트 스킬에 대한 산업계의 인식 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구는 우리나라 산업계가 요구하는 소프트 스킬과 외국인 유학생들의 역량 수준에 대해 알아보고자 국내 대학원 외국인 유학생들을 채용한 경험이 있는 산업계 인사담당자들을 대상으로 초점집단면담(FGI)을 수행하였다. 국내 산업계 인사담당자들로부터 수집한 자료를 분석한 결과, 이들이 국내에서 대학원 과정을 마친 외국인 유학생에게 요구하는 소프트 스킬과 관련하여 ‘의사를 정확히 이해하고 표현하기’, ‘지식과 정보를 공유하며 타인과 협력하기’, ‘문화적 차이에 유연하게 대응하기’, ‘직무 열의를 갖고 적극적으로 행동하기’ 등의 네 가지 핵심 주제를 도출할 수 있었다. 이들은 실제 직무 현장에서 상호 밀접하게 연계되어 하드 스킬을 지지하는 양상을 보이는데 이를 토대로 국내 취업 외국인 유학생의 소프트 스킬에 대한 산업계의 인식 모형을 제시하였다. 또한, 국내 산업계는 외국인 유학생들이 갖춘 소프트 스킬 수준에 대하여 개인차가 있음을 인정하지만, 내국인 또는 국내 대학원에서 유학하지 않고 외국에서 바로 국내 산업계에 취업한 외국인들의 역량과 비교하였을 때 외국인의 국내 대학원 과정에서의 학업이 이러한 역량 개발에 미치는 효과가 전반적으로 산업계가 기대하는 수준에 이르지는 못하는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study was conducted to understand the soft skills Korean industries demand and to evaluate international students’ level of competence in such skills. We conducted focus group interviews (FGIs) with industry human resource managers who have experience in hiring international graduate students. After analyzing the data collected from the personnel managers, we identified four key themes regarding the soft skills they require from international students who have completed graduate programs in Korea: “Understanding and expressing intentions accurately,” “Collaborating with others by sharing knowledge and information,” “Responding flexibly to cultural differences,” and “Acting enthusiastically with job engagement.” These four themes are closely linked to each other in the real workplace, while solidly supporting hard skills employers require. Based on these findings, we derived a model of employers’ perceptions of international students’ soft skills while working in Korea: the 3Cs (Communication, Collaboration, and Cultural flexibility) Model. Findings also indicate that there exists a gap between the actual level of competence in soft skills of foreign workers who completed graduate studies in Korea and the average level of such skills expected by Korean industries.
