Due to the spread of the coronavirus worldwide, the nation's professional sports competition was temporarily suspended last year, and the issuance of sports tickets was suspended for about 51 days. The suspension of the issuance of sports betting tickets caused serious problems in the creation of the National Sports Promotion Fund, a pivotal role of the Korean sports finance. To solve this problem, the National Assembly held a debate on the introduction of sports betting tickets for eSports games that can be issued. Thus, this study is about whether eSports can be introduced as an issue of sports betting tickets and the results are as follows.
First, in terms of the organizing organization's designation requirements, Korea eSports Association, which oversees eSports game, met the designation requirements specified in the National Sports Promotion Act, such as stable competition hosting ability, athlete’s registration and revocation authority, and competition rules‘ enactment and amendment authority.
Second, in terms of stability and sales revenues contribution, popularity and preference of eSports change frequently, so stability is insufficient in product composition, but sales revenues can be expected to be generated as the number of eSports spectators increases.
Third, in terms of match fixing possibility, there is a high chance of match fixing because there is a history of match fixing cases in relation to eSports games, also it is possible to provide customers with various game information.
Fourth, in terms of game producer’s copyright, disputes such as copyrights with game producers of eSports games exist, so when introducing sports betting tickets for eSports games, legal and institutional measures should be prepared to prevent disputes.
If eSports are introduced into sports betting tickets through comprehensive review of the above, it can be expected to establish a new foundation for the stable creation of the National Sports Promotion Fund and sustainable sports development in Korea.
