국문 초록

[연구 목적] 이 연구는 이토츄타(伊東忠太)의 예술관과 일본의 역사교과서 안에 기술된 고미술 서술과의 상관성을 찾기 위함이다. 이토 츄타는 일본미술사 성립과 관련해 언급되는 인물 중 한 명으로, 논문은 이토 츄타의 메이지기 활동과 세계건축여행을 통한 인식의 형성과정에 주목했다. [연구 내용] 츄타의 건축여행은 3년 3개월간 중국, 인도를 시작으로 이탈리아, 그리스, 아메리카 등지를 유람했고, 운강석굴을 세계에 처음으로 소개했다. 논문은 츄타가 운강석굴의 양식과 호류지 건축을 비교한 부분을 중심으로 살펴본 후, 메이지-다이쇼기에 발행된 국사교과서 내의 호류지 관련 부분에 대해 검토했다. [결론] 귀국 후 츄타의 활동은 플레처의 ‘건축의 나무’에 대비되는 새로운 건축모델을 제시하고, 내셔널리즘에 기반을 둔 건축진화론을 펼쳤다. 그의 건축진화론은 세계 건축의 역사 속에서 소위 ‘진화의 원칙’을 추출하고, 이를 일본의 건축이 취해야 한다는 진화주의의 방법론을 제시했다.

영문 초록

[PURPOSE] This study is intended to find a relationship between Ito Chuta’s view of art and art-related content described in Japanese history textbooks. Among the people mentioned in relation to the establishment of the history of Japanese art is Ito Chuta, this report on findings, which focused on his activities in the Meiji era and his perception of worldwide architecture, has been made. [CONTENTS] His perception of art (or architecture) has a deep association with his trip to visit worldwide architecture in the Meiji era. His trip lasted for three years and three months, starting from China and India and followed by Italy, Greece, and America, and the Yungang Grottoes were introduced to the world for the first time. The paper focused on Chuta's comparison of the style of Yungang Grottoes with the architecture of Horyuji and then reviewed the Horyuji-related part of the history textbook published in the Meiji-Taishō era. [RESULTS] After returning to Japan after his trip, he came up with a new architectural model which contrasted with The Tree of Architecture by Banister Fletcher and unfolded the theory of architectural evolution based on nationalism. His theory of architectural evolution suggested an evolutionary methodology that extracts the so-called “principle of evolution” from the history of world architecture and that Japanese architecture should take it.
