淸虛 休靜 관련 연구의 현황과 과제

국문 초록

청허 휴정(淸虛休靜, 1520-1604)은 1520년에 태어나 21세의 나이로 정식 출가하였다. 이후 1604년 입적할 때까지 그는 무려 65년이라는 세월을 승려로 살았다. 그는 『선가귀감』, 『청허집』, 『심법요초』, 『선교석』 등의 저술을 통해 선교겸수를 표방하는 한편, 궁극적 수행방안으로 간화선을 중흥하였다. 이와 함께 선·교·염불의 삼문(三門) 수행체계를 원융회통하여 조선중기 이후의 불교 방향성을 새롭게 제시하기도 하였다. 휴정의 일대기는 호법활동과 호국활동으로 상징할 수 있다. 그의 호법활동은 수행, 저술, 교육 등의 분야에 걸쳐 다양하게 전개되었으며, 조선불교 이전의 사상을 집성하여 조선후기의 선문종풍(禪門宗風)을 수립한 위상을 지니고 있다. 아울러 호국활동은 임진왜란 시기 의승(義僧) 참전을 앞장서 이끌었던 공적에서 뚜렷하다. 하지만 휴정이 참전을 결행하고 승군을 통섭한 기간은 불과 2-3년 남짓이었다는 사실을 고려할 때, 그를 평가함에 있어 출가 사문(沙門)으로서의 면모는 더욱 중시될 필요가 있지 않을까 한다. 이 논문은 청허 휴정과 관련한 연구사 검토를 목적으로 작성하였다. 이를 위해 필자는 먼저 청허 관련 연구를 종합적으로 수집 정리하는 작업을 진행한 바 있으며, 그 결과, 기존 연구는 ‘①생애와 저술 ②사상 ③법통 ④의승 활동 및 표충사 ⑤문학 및 기타’ 등의 다섯 가지 주제로 나눌 수 있음을 밝혔다. 이 논문은 이들 가운데 ‘문학 및 기타’ 항목을 제외한 분야의 주요 연구성과를 개략적으로 소개하고, 이들 연구에서 나타나는 몇 가지 과제와 문제점들을 제시하는 형식으로 구성하였다. 이 논문을 통해 향후 휴정 관련 연구의 방향이 새롭게 제시될 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

Cheongheo Hyujeong (1520-1604) was born in 1520 and officially entered the Buddhist priesthood at the age of 21. Afterwards, he lived as a monk for 65 years until he passed away in 1604. He advocated simultaneous practice of meditation in sitting and invocation of Buddha’s name through his writings such as ‘Seonga Gwigam’, ‘Cheongheo Collection’, ‘Simbeop Yocho’, and ‘Seongyoseok’, while also pursuing Ganwha Seon (word contemplation meditation) as an ultimate method of practice. Along with this, he presented the new direction of Buddhism after the mid-Joseon Dynasty by Weonyung Hoitong (complete accommodation and unification) of the three gates practice system of Seon, Doctrine, and Yeombul (Buddha chanting, recollecting, or recitation of Buddha’s name). Hyujeong’s life can be symbolized by activities to protect the Buddha- dharma and protect the country. His activities for the protection of the Buddha- dharma were developed in various fields such as practice, writing, and education and has the status of establishing the Wind of the Seon Gate and Sect in the late Joseon Dynasty by compiling the thoughts before Joseon Buddhism. In addition, his national defense activities are evident in his achievements leading the participation of the volunteer Sangha army during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. However, considering the fact that the period during which Hyujeong participated in the war and joined the volunteer Sangha army was only about 2-3 years, I think it is necessary to give more importance to his appearance as a Buddhist monk in evaluating him. This thesis was written for the purpose of reviewing the research history related to Cheongheo Hyujeong. To this end, the author first carried out the work of comprehensively collecting and organizing research related to Cheongheo, and as a result, the existing studies were divided into five themes: ① Life and writings ② Thought ③ Dharma lineage ④ The activity of the volunteer Sangha army and Pyochungsa shrine ⑤ Literature and others. This thesis outlines the major research achievements in the fields excluding ‘Literature and Others’ among them, and is composed in the form of presenting some tasks and problems that appear in these studies. It is hoped that this thesis will provide a new direction for Hyujeong-related research in the future.
