국문 초록

서양 고대철학에서 양상 개념이 시간과의 관계를 통해 논의되어왔다는 것은 널리 알려진 사실이다. 가능성 개념에 대한 아리스토텔레스의 논의는 이러한 전통의 중요한 뿌리가 되고 있다. 그중에서도 『형이상학』 테타 편의 4절에서는 가능성 개념이 시간과의 관계를 통해 본격적으로 다루어진다. 그러나 여기서 아리스토텔레스의 입장이 정확히 무엇인가에 대해서는 쉽게 해소될 수 없는 이견들이 존재한다. 특히 핵심적인 구절인 1047b3-6에 대해서는 상반된 해석이 제기되어 왔다. 일부 학자들은 이 구절에서 아리스토텔레스가 가능한 것은 언젠가는 실현될 것이라고 주장하고 있다고 해석하는 반면, 다른 학자들은 여기에서 아리스토텔레스가 결코 실현되지 않을 것이지만 가능한 것을 인정하고 있다고 해석한다. 이 논문의 목적은 『형이상학』 테타 편의 4절의 첫 부분인 1047b3-6이 어떻게 해석되어야 하는가에 대해 답하는 것이다. 이를 위해 우선 II에서는 테타 편 4절의 맥락적 상황에 대해 소개할 것이다. 그리고 III에서는 해당 구절에 대한 희랍어 텍스트를 확정하는 문제를 다루도록 하겠다. 이어 IV에서는 희랍어 텍스트를 문법적으로 분석하고, 가능한 해석과 그 해석에 제기되는 문제들을 검토하도록 한다. 마지막으로 V에서는 가장 유력하다고 생각되는 해석을 발전시킴으로써, 이 해석에 제기되는 문제들이 해결될 수 있음을 보일 것이다.

영문 초록

It is widely known that the concept of modality in Western ancient philosophy has been discussed in the relationship with time. Aristotle's discussion of the concept of possibility is important in this tradition. Among other things, Aristotle’s concept of possibility is dealt with time in Chapter 4 of Book Theta in Metaphysics. However, there are disagreements that cannot be easily resolved about what Aristotle's position is. In particular, conflicting interpretations have been raised about 1047b3-6. Some interpret that Aristotle argues that what is possible will one day be realized, while others interpret that Aristotle admits there can be such thing that is possible, although it will never be realized. The purpose of this paper is to answer how 1047b3-6, the first part of the Chapter 4 of Book Theta in Metaphysics, should be interpreted. To this end, first of all, I will introduce the contextual situation of Chapter 4 in II. And in III, we will deal with the problem of determining the original text for the phrase. In IV, we will see how the original text is analyzed grammatically, and what possible interpretations can be and what problems raised against each interpretation. Finally, in V, I will develop the most adequate interpretation and it will be shown that this interpretation can handle the problems raised against it.
