국문 초록

이 논문은 바이마르 시기의 두 지식인 레프 셰스토프와 칼 슈미트가 바로 크 철학자 블레즈 파스칼의 사상을 전유한 방식 및 그 귀결에 대해 탐구한다. 셰스 토프의 파스칼 독해는 에드문트 후설의 현상학에 대해 그가 벌인 철학적 전투의 중핵을 구성한다. 기하학적 확실성을 주창한 데카르트에 맞서 파스칼이 벌였던 사 상적 투쟁은 셰스토프에 의해 계승된다. 즉 셰스토프는 현상학적 환원을 통해 데카 르트적 확실성을 갱신하려 한 후설에게 맞섰던 것이다. 이 도전을 통해 셰스토프는 파스칼에 의지하여 파스칼을 뛰어넘으려는 대담한 시도를 결행한다. 반면 슈미트의 파스칼 독해는 정치신학적 토대 위에서 진행된 작업이다. 정치신학자로서 파스칼과 슈미트가 공유하는 특성은 내전에 대한 깊은 반감이다. 그러나 후자는 전자의 개인 적 신비주의를 배격하며, 기적의 유무를 결정하는 것은 초월적인 신이 아니라 지상 의 주권자라고 주장한 토머스 홉스를 추종한다. 파스칼의 비교 대상으로 홉스를 지 목한 슈미트의 선택은 그의 정치신학의 근원과 목표가 어디에 있는지를 가늠할 수 있게 해 준다. 셰스토프와 슈미트의 파스칼 독해를 통해 우리는 바로크와 바이마르 가 하나의 평행 세계를 이룬다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article tries to accounts for the way in which two Weimar intellectuals, Lev Shestov and Carl Schmitt, have appropriated the political and religious thoughts of Blaise Pascal who had lived in the Baroque culture. Shestov’s reading of Pascal amounts to the gist of the philosophical struggle he took up against phenomenology of Edmund Husserl. The challenge that as a deeply pious man Pascal had mounted to the geometric certainty proclaimed by René Descartes as beyond doubt is varied by Shestov who found in the Husserlian notion of epoché an intensified and renewed version of the Cartesian methodic doubt. By attempting to disqualify Husserl’s philosophical project on the basis of Pascal’s paradoxical faith, Shestov seems to have surreptitiously aimed at surpassing the Baroque thinker he revered. Schmitt, on the other hand, takes note of Pascal’s thought on the basis of his own political theology. As political theologians, indeed, Pascal and Schmitt have in common a strong antipathy towards civil war. Yet the latter rejects the former’s personal mysticism that Schmitt thinks is ignorant of, or indifferent to, the concrete reality of politics. In doing so, Schmitt follows in footstep of Thomas Hobbes who had argued that it is not a transcendent God but a worldly sovereign who can decide whether there happened a miracle or not. The fact that Schmitt has measured Pascal against Hobbes enables us to locate the origin and end of his political theology. Through Shestov’s and Schmitt’s readings of Pascal, one might well come to realize that the Baroque and the Weimar constitute a sort of parallel world.
