사변과 상식 그리고 이성

칸트 시대의 대표적인 철학자 멘델스존은 근대의 유대주의 혹은 미학에 대한 관심과 더불어 최근 새롭게 조명되고 있다. 하지만 멘델스존의 유대주의나 미학의 토대가 되는 멘델스존의 합리주의 철학에 대한 연구는 여전히 부족한 것이 현실이다. 독일 합리주의 철학의 역사에서 흔히 멘델스존은 합리주의 철학에 대한 비 판적 분위기가 고조되는 가운데 합리주의를 옹호하고자 했지만 전통적인 입장과 통 속적인 입장 사이에서 방황하다 좌절한 철학자로 평가되곤 한다. 이런 부정적 평가 에 맞서서 이 논문은 멘델스존의 후기 저작 『아침시간』을 중심으로 그가 제안하는 대안적 합리주의 철학, 즉 사변과 상식의 조화를 추구하는 합리주의 철학의 긍정적 면모를 확인하고자 한다. 이를 위해 우리는 II장에서 『아침시간』을 통해 멘델스존이 수행하고자 한 두 가지 철학적 과제를 분석한다. III장에서는 첫째 과제와 관련하여 멘델스존이 광신주의적 반동에 맞서서 합리주의 철학을 어떻게 옹호하는지 확인한다. IV장에서는 둘째 과제와 관련하여 멘델스존이 어떻게 전통적 합리주의의 사변적 경향을 비판하며, 어떻게 사변과 상식의 조화를 대안으로 제시하는지 해명한다. 마지막 V장에서는 앞선 논의를 바탕으로 멘델스존에 대한 전통적 평가의 문제를 지적하고, 멘델스존의 새로운 합리주의를 관용적 합리주의로 규정한다.

영문 초록

Mendelssohn, a representative philosopher of Kant's era, has recently been re-evaluated as interest in modern Judaism or aesthetics has grown. However, there is still a lack of research on Mendelssohn’s rationalism which is the basis of his Judaism or aesthetics. In the history of German rationalist philosophy, Mendelssohn is often evaluated as a philosopher who tried to defend rationalism in the face of increased criticism of rationalist philosophy, but was frustrated by wandering between traditional and popular positions. Against this negative evaluation, this paper attempts to reveal the positive aspect of a new rationalist philosophy that he proposes as an alternative to traditional rationalism in his last work, Morning Hours, that is, the rationalist philosophy that pursues the harmony between speculation and common sense. For this purpose, in Ch. II, we analyze two philosophical tasks that Mendelssohn intended to carry out through his Morning Hours. With regard to his first task, in Ch. III, we examine how Mendelssohn defends the rationalist philosophy against the fanatical reaction to it. And with regard to his second task, in the Ch. IV, we elucidate how Mendelssohn criticizes the speculative tendencies of traditional rationalism, and how he proposes a harmony between speculation and common sense as an alternative. On the basis this discussion, finally in the Ch. V, we point out the injustice of the traditional evaluation of Mendelssohn and determine his new rationalism as tolerant rationalism.
