국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 인격에 관한 근대적 논의의 시원으로서 로크와 라이프니츠의 인격론의 주요 내용과 세부 논점들을 구체적으로 파악하는 것이다. 로크는 『인간지성론 』에서 경험주의의 관점에서 개체화 문제를 재구성하는 과정에서 인격에 관한 새로운 규정을 제시한다. 로크에 따르면 인격적 동일성의 근거는 다름 아닌 의식이다. 라이프니츠는 합리주의의 관점에서 로크의 논의에 대응하는 『신인간지성론』을 집필한다. 라이프니츠는 개별자의 의식에 근거한 인격적 동일성은 인격에 대한 부분적인 이해에 불과하다고 지적하며, 자신의 모나드론, 미세지각론에 근거하여 인격에 관한 전체상을 제시한다. 로크와 라이프니츠의 논의를 통해 이후 우리는 근대 인격 논의의 두 가지 축은, 다름 아니라 ‘주체성’(로크)과 ‘관계성’(라이프니츠)이라는 점을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The objective of this paper is to conduct a detailed examination of the primary and subsidiary issues in the theories on person between Locke and Leibniz, which constitutes the foundational discourse for modern philosophical discussions on person. In An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Locke advances a novel definition of person as part of his reconstruction of the problem of individuation from the standpoint of modern empiricism. For Locke, the basis of personal identity lies in consciousness. In response, Leibniz, from a rationalist perspective, composed New Essays on Human Understanding. Leibniz critiques Locke's view, arguing that grounding personal identity solely in individual consciousness provides only a partial understanding of person. Drawing on his theories of monadology and petite perceptions, Leibniz offers a more comprehensive account of person. The discussions between Locke and Leibniz ultimately reveal that modern philosophical discourse on person is structured around two central axes: “subjectivity” (Locke) and “relationality” (Leibniz).
