문정왕후(文定王后)의 불교회생 노력과 그 불교사적 의의

국문 초록

2000년대 이후에 들어서면서부터 우리 학계의 조선시대 불교사 관련 연구는 양과 질적인 측면 모두에서 발전을 거듭해오고 있다. 최근의 연구는 역사학 분야에서 활발하게 주도해 나가고 있는데, 이들 연구에 힘입어 이제 조선시대 불교는 이전과 전혀 다른 차원에서 이해되는 단계까지 이르렀다고 평가할 수 있다. 이 논문은 조선 명종대 문정왕후의 불교 회생 노력과 그것이 지니는 불교사적 의의를 살펴보고자 하는 목적으로 작성되었다. 이를 위해 논문의 앞부분에서는 중종-명종 시기 불교와 관련한 최근의 새로운 견해들을 소개하고, 아울러 이들 연구에 나타나는 몇 가지 의문점들을 검토해 보고자 하였다. 특히 중종대 불교를 ‘극렬한 탄압기’로 인식하지 말아야 한다는 최근의 주장에 대한 필자의 견해를 나름대로 제시해 보고자 하였다. 이어지는 내용에서는 1550년(명종 5) 문정왕후가 주도적으로 결행한 ‘선교양종(禪敎兩宗) 복립(復立)’의 과정과 그것이 지니고 있는 불교사적 의의를 살펴보았다. 문정왕후는 불교 회생을 위한 의도적 절차와 시행계획을 미리 구상하고 있었을 가능성이 크다. 아울러 이러한 일련의 조치들을 책임지고 이끌어나갈 수 있는 대표 승려도 물색하였다. 허응 보우(虛應普雨)는 이러한 과정에서 발탁된 당대의 고승이었다. 문정왕후와 보우에 의해 추진된 명종대 불교회생 노력은 이를 지원하는 정치집단이 없으면 불가능한 일이었다. 최근 연구자들은 이들 세력을 ‘훈척세력’으로 단정하고 있지만, 과연 명종대 훈척세력으로 지칭되는 정치집단이 불교정책에 대해서도 동일한 의지를 지니고 있었는지는 불분명하다. 명종대 선교양종 복립은 불교, 또는 승단이 존립하기 위한 최소한의 근거를 회복하는 일이었다. 비록 일시적이었지만 이 시기에 진행된 선교양종의 복립과 도첩제, 승과고시의 복구 등으로 인해 불교계는 가까스로 ‘회생’의 계기를 마련할 수 있었다. 그리고 이 시기의 회생은 17세기 이후 전개된 불교계 변화와 상당 부분 연관성을 지니고 있다는 사실을 유념할 필요가 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Since entering the 2000s, our academia’s research on the Buddhist history during the Joseon Dynasty has continued to develop in terms of both quantity and quality. Recent research is leading the field of history actively, and with the influence of such research it can be evaluated that Buddhism in the Joseon Dynasty has reached the level, understood on an entirely different dimension than before. This paper was written with the purpose to examine the efforts of Queen Munjeong of Joseon Myeongjong period to revive Buddhism as well as its significance in the history of Buddhism. In order to achieve this purpose, the first section of the paper introduces the newly held views regarding Buddhism during the rule from Jungjong to Myeongjong and attempts to examine a few questions that appear in these studies. Particularly, I tried to suggest my personal opinions on the recent argument that Buddhism during Jungjong period should not be perceived as a “period of extreme oppression”. The following section examines the process of “the restoration (復立) of the Seongyoyangjong (禪敎兩宗)” that was led by Queen Munjeong in the year of 1550 (the 5th year of Myeongjong's reign) as well as its significance on the Buddhist history. It is highly likely that Queen Munjeong had been planning the deliberate procedures and implementation plans for the resuscitation of Buddhism in advance. Moreover, she also searched a representative monk who was able to lead the series of such measures. Heoeung-Bou (虛應普雨) was the contemporary high priest, who was appointed during such process. The efforts to revive the Myeongjong period Buddhism, promoted by Queen Munjeong and Bou, would have been impossible without the political group that supported such efforts. Recent researchers refer to such forces as “Huncheog forces”, yet it is equivocal whether the political group, termed as “Huncheog forces” during the of Myeongjong period, had possessed the same willingness for the Buddhist policy. The restoration of the Seongyoyangjong of the Myeongjong period was the task to revive the minimum basis for the existence of Buddhism or the monastic group. Despite being temporary, the Buddhist community barely provided the opportunity of “revival” by the restoration of Seongyoyangjong, Docheobje, restoration of monastery examination proceeded during this period. Also, it is necessary to note that the revival during this period is highly correlated with the changes in Buddhism that occurred since the 17th century.
