국문 초록

<화엄에서의 불>을 주제로 다양한 여래신을 살펴보았고, 그러한 여래의 몸을 만나 보기 위해서는 여래를 볼 수 있는 안목(眼目)을 갖추어야 된다는 의미에서 견불(見佛)의 의미를 먼저 추구하였다. 그리고 화엄의 여래십신(如來十身)을 이해하기 위하여 중국화엄교판에서의 불신에 대한 견해를 살펴보았고, 「여래십신상해품」의 97종의 불신장엄상을 표로 정리하여 구체적인 형상을 살피려고 노력하였다. 이어서 여래수호(如來隨好)의 공덕과 『화엄경』의 여래 10종 광명이 불신(佛身)과 밀접함도 살펴보았다. 「여래십신상해품」에서 여래신의 각 부분에서 광명이 곧 여래의 모습으로 나타난다. 그리고 동시에 공덕의 상징으로 여래신을 장엄하고 있음을 보았다. 『화엄경』 「세주묘엄품」에는 여래가 성도하신 법보리장(法菩提場)에서 마니보배의 깃발 아래 항상 광명이 방출된다는 경문이 나오는 것을 시작으로 광명이 도량의 장엄으로서 표현되기도 하고, 여래신의 상징으로 나타나기도 한다. 삼세제불이 소유하고 있는 불가사의한 신통력이 광명을 통하여 시간과 공간을 초월해서 보여 지는 것이다. 특히 여래가 항상 대광명을 놓으니 그 광명 속에 무량불이 계신다고 하는 문장은 여래의 신력의 모습을 광명으로 비유한 것임을 알 수 있다. 이러한 광명은 중생의 어리석음을 파괴할 수 있는 능력을 의미하며, 또한 법을 항상 설하는 주체인 불신(佛身)을 상징한다. 그리고 중생의 지옥신(地獄身)은 악업의 소산이고 여래의 위신력은 선근과 반야바라밀의 위덕(威德)의 힘이라고 설하는 경문을 통하여 여래신은 곧 온갖 공덕의 총체적인 모습이며 광명으로 충만해 있다는 것을 깨닫게 한다.

영문 초록

In the topic of The Buddha in Flower Garland Sutras looking at the characteristics of a Tathāgata’s physical appearances, I spend this paper into looking for the meaning to experience of the complete perfect enlightenment is to develop the insight. For understanding of the characteristics of 10 Tathāgata’s physical appearances in Flower Garland Sutras, this paper compared with Tathāgata’s physical appearance of Chinese version of this sutra. This study extends into catching more specific meaning of Tathāgata’s 97 kinds of adornments in the chapter of The Ocean of the Characteristics of a Tathāgata’s Ten Bodies. In the chapter of The Ocean of the Characteristics of a Tathāgata’s Ten Bodies, the radiant light was identified with Tathāgata himself and also symbolizes the merit and virtues of Buddha. First chapter of The Wondrous Adornments of the Rulers of the Worlds, Buddha’s enlightened place was constantly poured forth bright light under banners made of mani gems. This radiant light also symbolize Buddha himself too. Mysterious supernatural power of all Buddhas of past, present and future is revealed through radiant light which transcend time and space. Every spiritual transformation of all Buddhas of the three periods of time without exception was visible within that light, and all adornments of the lands of all Buddhas throughout inconceivable eons were completely manifest therein. The emitted awesome, magnificent light liberates all sentient beings ignorance, as when the rising sun illuminates the whole world like Buddha. His radiance fully pervaded the Dharma Realm is equally and without discrimination to subdue all sentient beings. This full magnificent light of Tathāgata through sutra texts is the integral attribute of all universal virtues.
