격물치지론의 교육학적 해석

국문 초록

일반적으로 교과의 내면화는 학생의 마음 바깥에 있는 지식이 학생의 마음 안으로 들어가는 것이라고 설명된다. 그러나 그러한 설명은 인간 마음의 구조 및 지식과 관련하여 구체화되지 않는 한 이해되기 어렵다. 성리학의 수양론은 교과의 내면화를 설명하는 교육이론으로서 주목의 대상이 된다. 성리학에 의하면，교육은 인간의 마음을 하늘의 경지로 이끄는 것을 목적으로 하는 일이다. 성리학은 세계와 마음을 두 개의 층， '즉 마음과 사물(또는 사물과 사물)의 구분이 적용되지 않는 위층과 마음과 사물이 서로 구분되는 아래층이 겹쳐져 있는 중층구조로 파악한다. 성리학에서 심성함양의 과정은 ‘중층구조’의 아래 위층 사이의 운동으로 파악된다. 교과의 내면화를 통한 심성함양은 아래층의 마음，즉 ‘표현 이후’의 마음이 위층의 마음 , 즉 ‘표현 이전’의 마음을 회복하는 과정을 가리킨다. 성리학의 격물치지론은 경전 공부 또는 교과공부를 통한 심성함양의 과정을 설명하는 이론이다. 교과의 내면화는 격물치지의 개념에 비추어 볼 때 올바르게 이해될 수 있다. 주희가 체계화한 성리학에서 귀신의 개념은 ‘표현 이전’의 마음과 ‘표현 이후’의 마음 사이의 교섭을 가능하게 하는 원초적 세력을 나타낸다는 점에서 교과의 내면화를 이끄는 추진력이 무엇인가를 설명하는 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 교사는 귀신의 경험적 구현체라고 볼 수 있고， 배움의 도상에 있는 학생은 교사의 도움을 받는 가운데 자신의 마음을 하늘에 합치시키려는 노력을 끊임없이 기울이게 되며 그 과정이 바로 교과의 내면화이다.

영문 초록

There have been various explanations about how knowledge can be internalized in one's mind. It has been generally accepted that the knowledge from outward enters into human mind. But it is far from sufficient understanding, which requires more valid and refined explanation. Neo-Confucianists tried to explain the structure of mind in view of a metaphysical structure, so called 'double-layer structure'. They suppose a new theoretical system for explanation of moral self-cultivation which consists of li(理)，ch‘i (氣), nature(性)，feeling(情)，sincerity (誠) and reverence(敬). A s an educational theory, Neo-Confucianism presents the process of human m ind's cultivation toward 'H eaven'(天) which is the ultimate goal of life. Leading human mind toward 'Heaven' is the unity of Heaven and man through the cultivation of mind. According to 'double-layer structure'，the world and the mind consists of two layers. In the lower layer, there is a distinction between the mind and the world, but in the upper layer there is no such distinction. So cultivation of mind, as a way to the ultimate goaKthe unity of Heaven and man), should be understood in this metaphysical sense. Leading man's mind to Heaven can be made possible by internalizing subject matter and this process also can be newly conceptualized in terms of the 'double-layer structure'. Internalization of subject matter can be explained as the process of transforming the lower layer mind into the upper one. Neo-Confucianistic theory of the extention of knowledge by investigation of things(格物致知) shows how the movement from the lower layer to the upper layer is possible. This theory postulates an intermediate between 'expressed'( 已發) mind and rnot-yet-expressed'(未發) mind. This is the 'G h o st'(鬼神). In the context of education, teacher can serve as an empirical manifestation of 'Ghost'. He leads the student's mind toward 'Heaven'. Learning and teaching is a continuous effort to reach at the 'unity of Heaven and man' with the help of 'Ghost'.
