퇴계 이황 설화의 담론화 양상과 의미의 분기

국문 초록

본 연구는 이황의 인물전설을 대상으로 담론화 양상과 의미의 분기를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이황은 조선 유학의 태두로서 과거부터 현재까지 계층을 막론하고 주목받은 인물이다. 이를 반영하듯 이황의 인물전설은 문헌설화와 구비설화로 총 343편이 전승되고 있다. 설화는 사람들이 관심을 갖는 대상과 사건에 대해 의미를 만들어 내는 매체이다. 그래서 설화는 문학이기 이전에 미디어 역할을 수행한다. 인물전설은 대상 인물이 지닌 사실성의 역사라기보다는 이해 구성의 담론이라 할 수 있다. 이황의 인물전설도 문헌과 구비, 전승 주체에 따라 이야기 유형별로 의미의 분기가 명확히 나타난다. 이황의 출생담은 문헌설화에서 적강 모티프 사용, 허구의 요소의 사실성 확보 등이 이야기를 구성하는 특징으로 나타났으며, 구비설화는 전승 주체에 따라 달걀을 이용한 명당획득담과 태몽담이 활용되었다. 이황의 성장담과 활약담은 이황의 후손과 일반 사람들이 이황의 인물상을 어떤 의미로 활용하느냐에 따라서 이야기 구성과 전승에 큰 차이를 보였다. 이황의 후손들은 일화를 이용한 사화적 성격의 이야기를 전승하면서 이황의 권계성을 부각하고 역사적 위치를 공고히 하였다. 반면 기층 사람들은 자신들이 향유하는 다양한 이야기를 활용해서 유학자 이황을 이인 이황으로 탈바꿈시켰다. 이인 이황은 구비설화 전승 주체가 이황의 이름 기호를 전유한 결과였다. 하지만 이인 이황은 담론을 구성·전승하는데 일정한 한계를 지니고 있다. 그래서 기층 사람들은 사실성을 토대로 하는 또 다른 이야기를 구성하기 시작했고, 이를 이용해서 사회 체제를 비판하는 담론으로 활용한다. 여기에 관여한 인물이 이황의 가정 내 여성들이다. 재가한 둘째 며느리와 재취 권씨부인은 이황의 인물전설에서 여성담론을 구성하는 중요 인물들이다. 하지만 구비설화의 전승 주체는 두 여성이 지닌 본질적 문제를 회피한 채, 이황의 인물상을 강화하는 데만 활용하고 있다. 이는 이황의 인물전설에서 중요 부분을 담당하는 여성담론의 한계로 지적된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the divergence of discoursalization aspect and meaning targeting Lee Hwang s character legendry. Lee Hwang, a great authority on Confucianism in Joseon, has been noticed by all classes from the past to the present. As if reflecting this, Lee Hwang s character legendry has been handed down in a total of 343 literary narratives and oral narratives. Narratives are a medium that creates meaning about objects and events that people care about. So, a narrative plays a media role before it is literature. Character legendry can be said to be a discourse of understanding composition rather than a hitale of the realism of the target character. Lee Hwang s character legendry also clearly shows the divergence of meaning for each tale type depending on the literature, oral tradition, and subject of transmission. In Lee Hwang s birth tale, the use of the ‘banishment from heaven’ motif in the literary narrative, and securing the realism of fictional elements were found to be the characteristics of the tale, and in the oral narrative, according to the subject, the tale of acquiring a propitious site using eggs and the tale of a dream of forthcoming conception were used. Lee Hwang s tale of growth and activities showed a big difference in tale composition and transmission according to how Lee Hwang s descendants and ordinary people utilize the meaning of Lee Hwang s figure image. As descendants of Lee Hwang passed on a tale of a social nature using anecdotes, they emphasized Lee Hwang s point of admonition and consolidated his historical position. On the other hand, people from the folk classes used various tales they enjoyed to transform the Confucian scholar Lee Hwang into another Lee Hwang. Another Lee Hwang was the result of appropriating Lee Hwang s name symbol by the subject of oral narrative transmission. However, another Lee Hwang has certain limitations in constructing/transmitting discourse. So the people of the folk classes began to compose another tale based on the factuality, and it was used as a discourse to criticize the social system. The people involved here are the women within Lee Hwang s family. The married second daughter‐in‐law and the second marriage wife Mrs. Kwon are an important figure image who composes the feminine discourse in Lee Hwang s character legendry. However, the subject of the oral narrative is used only to reinforce Lee Hwang s figure image while avoiding the essential problems of the two women. This is pointed out as a limitation of the feminine discourse, which plays an important part in Lee Hwang s character legendry.
