국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 전주와 인근지역에서 구전되는 이거두리 이야기가 기독교계와 향토사 및 구비문학 분야에서 조명받게 된 과정을 검토하고, 이거두리의 출생과 행적, 그리고 죽음과 사후의 구전서사에 나타난 인물형상을 살펴보는 것이다. 이거두리의 본명은 이보한(1872-1931)이다. 양반 출신으로 초기 기독교인이기도 했던 이보한은 각종 善行과 奇行을 펼친 인물로 전주지역에서는 ‘이거두리’라는 이름으로 잘 알려져 있다. 이거두리 구전서사는 1970년대 이후로 기독교, 향토사, 구비문학 세 분야에서 발굴·채록되었다. 민족문화 담론이 활발하던 1980년대 전주의 향토사학자 조병희가 이거두리의 생애와 행적 이야기를 지역문화계에 적극적으로 소개하면서 이거두리는 전주지역을 대표하는 향토인물로 자리잡게 되었다. 이거두리의 인물형상은 이거두리 삶의 주요 대목인 출생과 성장, 선행, 죽음의 이야기에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 이거두리의 출생과 성장 이야기는 해학담으로, 주요 행적 이야기는 시혜담으로, 죽음 이야기는 저승설화로 전해진다. 해학담 속 이거두리는 庶長子라는 반쪽 양반 혈통과 한쪽 눈이 먼 장애를 스스로 해학의 대상으로 삼아 봉건사회의 제도적 모순을 비꼬고 장애에 대한 편견을 비판하는 자유분방한 인물로 나타난다. 봉건사회에 대한 일탈과 저항은 건달형 인물과 공통적인 특성이다. 그러나 이거두리는 자신의 결핍요소를 스스로 희화화할 뿐, 저잣거리에서 사기와 속임수로 사사로운 이익을 취하는 악한은 아니다. 자유분방하되 악한이 아니기에 시혜담이 전승될 수 있고, 저승설화가 적선담의 성격을 띠어도 위화감이 생기지 않는다. 해학담에서 이거두리의 형상이 봉건사회의 부조리를 거침없이 폭로하며 세상과 맞부딪친 기인이라면, 시혜담과 저승설화에서 이거두리는 세상을 포용한 적선자의 형상을 하고 있다. 이거두리 구전서사 전승집단은 이거두리를 시혜자 또는 적선자로 형상화함으로써 혈통과 장애의 문제로 세상과 불화하던 반항아 이거두리를 세상과 화해시킨다. ‘거지대장’이라는 이거두리의 형상은 구세주가 필요했던 국권상실의 시대에 국가가 돌보지 못한 빈자들에게 구원자 역할을 했다는 점에서 성자에 가깝다. 세속적 인간의 전형인 건달형 인물의 죽음은 대개 설화의 관심사가 되지 않지만, 이거두리 이야기의 구전공동체는 저승설화에서 이거두리를 저승곳간에 재물을 쌓아둔 적선자로 등장시켜 이거두리의 죽음에 신성하고 보상적인 의미를 부여한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the process in which the stories of ‘Yi Geoduri’, orally passed down in Jeonju and nearby areas, has been highlighted within the local community, in local history and oral literature since the 1970s, and to examine the figure of Yi Geoduri in oral narratives. Yi’s real name is Bohan Yi(1872-1931), who was an early Christian in Korea, was a person who had various eccentric behaviors and performed good deeds while accompanying with beggars. His satirical wit and wit-filled anecdotes unfolded by Yi Geoduri are familiar with us because we have seen such things in the traditional narratives. Yi carries on the line of the humorous characters. In addition, he was attracted to attention as a scamp like people type character because he resisted the contradictions of feudal society and showed free-spirited behavior. However, when looking at theoral narratives of Yi Geoduri collectively, Yi is constructing a unique character that is clearly distinguished from the scamp like people type. After reviewing the process in which the oral narratives of Yi was illuminated in various fields, I will look at the unique character figure of Yi Geoduri in the oral history. When the materials in each field are summarized as a whole, we can reconstruct the history of ① birth and growth ② achievements ③ death and after death. This paper looked at the figure of Yi Geoduri based on this history. What draws attention most as an element that constructs Yi’s figure is an unconventional departure and odd deeds. It seems that Yi’s deviation and demeanor came from the discrimination he was born as a half-noble class and suffered in the family, and the influence of modern change. At first glance, the wit and satire of Yi look like those of a scamp like people type character. However, the eccentric behaviors and deeds that Yi performed in resisting the remnants and contradictions of the feudal society in the modern cataclysmic period have nothing to do with a villan who fulfills his desires by fraud and deception. This point is markedly different from the scamp like people type character, which is the epitome of worldly human beings. Not only the appearance of Yi in the humorous story is the image of secular man, but also the inner image of Yi in the story of doing beggars a favor is sacred. the figure of Yi Geoduri presented by a group of oral narratives is close to a saint in the story of Yi’s good deeds, who pretended to be a beggar captain and helped the poor, and in the anecdotes of the funeral ceremonies held by the beggars and the story of afterlife.
