비극형 우렁색시 설화의 전설적 특성과 현실 인식

국문 초록

본고에서는 비극형 우렁색시 38편을 결말부의 양상에 따라 ‘(가) 남녀 변신형’, ‘(나) 이별형’, ‘(다) 재혼형’으로 나누어 살폈다. 비교적 후기에 채록된 (나)형에서는 ‘서기(瑞氣)’가 미모 등으로 대체되고, 금기 모티프가 생략되는 등 신이 화소가 축소 또는 생략되는 세속화 양상을 보인다. 우렁색시설화에서는 권력자가 하층민 남자의 아내를 뺏는 일의 불공정성을 고발한다. ‘적강(謫降) 화소’·‘용궁 관념’·‘서기(瑞氣)’ 등 우렁색시의 신이 화소는 권력자의 횡포라는 비극적 정황 앞에서 무력하고 오히려 비극적 정황을 고조시키는 역할을 한다. 결연형인 단순형과 고난극복형에서는 환상성과 초월적인 힘이 주인공을 도와 행복한 결말에 이르게 하는 인과응보가 이루어지는 조화로운 세계에 대한 안위를 제공한다. 그러나 비극형에서는 신이성이 세계의 폭력 앞에 좌절되면서 자아의 원망과 기대에 부합되지 않는 세계의 모습을 통해 세계의 폭력 앞에 왜소한 고난당하는 자아의 모습을 그려낸다. 38편에 이르는 비극형의 존재는 불법과 폭력이 만연한 세상을 경계하게 하여 삶에 대한 온전한 이해에 이르게 하는 데 도움을 주었다고 본다. 한국 설화 전승집단은 결연형 우렁색시를 통해서 희망과 위로를 얻는 동시에, 비극형 우렁색시를 통해 인간의 삶에 존재하는 위험과 악의 정황을 경계할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I examined 38 tragic versions of ‘Snail Maiden(우렁색시) . These are divided into ‘(A) male and female transformation type’, ‘(B) breakup type’, and ‘(C) remarriage type’ according to the pattern of the ending. In type (B), which was recorded relatively later, ‘seogi (瑞气)’ is replaced by beauty, etc., and taboo motifs are omitted, showing a secularization aspect in which the mystic pixels are reduced or omitted. In ‘Snail Maiden(우렁색시) , the injustice of the powerful taking the wife of a man from the lower classes is denounced. In the face of the tragic situation of tyranny of those in power, the mystic divine aspects in dark poetry such as ‘coming down from the sky(적강, 謫降)’, ‘the notion of Dragon Palace’ and ‘mysterious energy(서기)’ are powerless and play a role in heightening the tragic situation. In the simple type and the overcoming hardship type, which are the marriage types, they provide comfort in a harmonious world where fantasy and transcendent power help the protagonist to lead to a happy ending. However, in the tragic type, divine power is frustrated by the violence of the world. Through the image of the world that does not meet the resentment and expectations of the self, the tragic type depicts the suffering self as dwarfed in the face of the violence of the world. It is believed that the existence of the tragic form up to the 38 versions has helped to bring us to a fuller understanding of life by making us wary of a world where lawlessness and violence are rampant. The Korean folktale tradition group was able to gain hope and comfort through the relationship-type of ‘Snail Maiden(우렁색시) , and at the same time, could be wary of the dangers and evil circumstances that exist in human life through the tragic versions of it.
