교사열의가 학생의 국어, 영어, 수학 학업성취도에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 부산시 교육청에서 주관하는 ‘부산교육종단연구(Busan Educational Longitudinal Survey)’ 중 초등학교 4학년 패널의 5차년도 자료를 이용하여 중학교 교사의 열의 수준이 학생의 국어, 영어, 수학 학업성취도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 다층모형(Hierarchical Liner Model, HLM)을활용하여 분석하였다. 분석에는 결측치를 제외한 120개교와 이에 재학중인 2,909명의 학생을 대상으로 하였다. 연구결과를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생수준만을 투입한 조건모형Ⅰ의 분석결과 세과목 모두 공통적으로 전년도성적, 학습시간, 성별, 학습효능감, 학습참여가 정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 영어와 수학 과목의 경우에는 이 외 추가로 사교육비와 부모-학생관계가 정적인 영향을주는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 조건모형Ⅰ에 학교수준을 추가로 투입한 조건모형Ⅱ의 분석결과 교사열의는 국어와 수학과목에만 정적으로 유의미한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 교사열의와 성별의 상호작용항을 투입하여 조절효과를 분석한 결과 국어 학업성취도에만 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 학업성취도에 대한 교사열의의 중요성을 실증적으로 입증하였으며 본 연구의결과를 바탕으로 교사열의와 관련한 정책 수립 방향을 제시하고 후속 연구에 대해 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study examined the effects of teacher engagement on middle school students’ academic achievement in Korean, English, and mathematics by analyzing data from the Busan Educational Longitudinal Survey (BELS). A series of hierarchical linear models were utilized to obtain a more rigorous estimation of teacher engagement effects. As a result of analyzing data from 2,902 students enrolled in 120 middle schools in the Busan metropolitan area, it was found that such student-level variables as prior academic achievement scores, time spent on study, student gender, a sense of learning efficacy, and student academic engagement had a positive effect on the academic achievements in all three academic subjects. Of the school-level variables, the effects of teacher engagement were significant and positive for academic achievement in Korean and mathematics; however, teacher engagement was not significantly related to students’ achievement in English. This study also reports a significant moderating effect of teacher engagement on students’ Korean achievement scores. Based on these results, policy implications and suggestions for future studies are discussed.
