국문 초록

본 연구는 1세대 혼혈인과 다문화청년 세대의 정체성과 탄력성을 두 집단의 비교 관점에서 고찰하였다. 1세대 혼혈인과 다문화청년 10명을 대상으로 개별 심층면접을 진행한 결과, 1세대 혼혈인은 ‘용납할 수 없는 존재’로 출생하여 ‘타자화를 통한 배제’의 과정을 삶 전체에서 경험하였다. ‘나를 버린 나라’ 대한민국에서 ‘그래도 한국인’의 정체성을 갖고 있지만, 주류집단에 속할 수 없는 ‘박탈과 혼돈’의 삶을 살고 있었다. 이와 대조적으로 다문화 청년은 ‘놀림의 대상’으로 ‘부담과 불편함’을 경험하였으나 ‘이중문화 정체성의 한국인’으로 자부심이 있었다. 또한, 혼혈의 인종적 지위가 주류사회에서 융화할 수 없는 취약성의 위험요인이라면 다문화청년의 외모와 이중문화 경험은 자신들만의 고유한 보호요인이었다. 혼혈인은 역경을 통해 역경에 대처하였으며, 다문화청년은 다양한 자원을 활용하여 도전에 대응하고 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 다문화사회를 지향하기 위해 주류사회의 인식 개선의 필요성과 다문화정책의 기본 조건으로서 재범주화의 중요성을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study examined the identity and resilience of the first generation mixed-race and the multicultural youth. As a result of the study, first generation mixed-race were born as “unacceptable beings” and experienced the process of “exclusion through otherization”. Although they had the identity of Koreans in the “country that abandoned them,” they were living a life of “deprivation and chaos”. In contrast, multicultural youth experienced “burden and discomfort” due to differences as “objects of teasing,” but were proud of being “Koreans with dual cultural identity.” To them, multiculturalism was not deprivation and exclusion, but “opportunities and blessings”. While the racial status of mixed-race was a risk factor for vulnerability that could not be integrated into the mainstream society, the appearance and bicultural experience of multicultural youth were unique protective factors that they only could possess. Mixed-race coped with adversity through adversity, but multicultural youth responded to challenges by using various resources. Finally, this study suggested that it is critical to improve the awareness of mainstream society and recategorization is a basic condition for multicultural policy and multicultural society.
