원불교 교화의 양상과 방식

국문 초록

본 연구는 소태산의 교화 행적을 구분하여 정리하고 교육ㆍ자선 등 다양한 분야로 확대되고 있는 다양한 교화양상과 방식을 성찰하고 과제를 제시하였다. 소태산은 일제강점기라는 시대적 제약 속에서 28년간 영산, 변산, 익산을 중심으로 조직과 제도를 겸비하고 공개적으로 단체를 결성하였다. 아울러 인재양성과 경전편찬에 주력하면서 교화ㆍ교육ㆍ자선의 방면에 중점을 두고 교화기반을 마련했다. 원불교의 가장 특징적인 교화방식으로 꼽을 수 있는 것은 교화단이다. 10인 1단의 교화단 조직을 통해서 교화의 양적ㆍ질적 성장이 이루어질 것으로 기대하면서 최근에는 ‘2만 교화단 단장양성 훈련’에 정성을 쏟고 있다. 또한 지역사회와 함께 하고 지역주민에게 기여하는 교화를 전개하기 위해서 체제를 정비하는 노력도 시도되고 있다. 교구자치제 실시 및 교구별 법인 설립, 공동교화 모색 등이 그것이다. 교당중심의 교화에서 벗어나 교화방식과 대상을 교화의 저변을 확대하기 위해 군인교화, 경찰교화 등으로 다양화하기 위한 노력도 새롭게 시도하고 있으며, 2011년 10월 미국에서 개원한 원달마센터를 전초기지로 국외총부를 설치하고 세계교화에 박차를 가하고 있는 것도 주목된다. 앞으로 원불교 교리에 근거해서 사회적 문제를 해결하는 방법을 제시하는 노력과 교당의 적정 규모화 등을 통하여 교화성장의 중심동력을 마련하는 것도 매우 중요하다.

영문 초록

This study proffers a general description of the edification methods used by Won-Buddhism with a special focus on classifying and organizing Sotaesan’s past edification by examining the various condition and methods in areas such as education and charity, And finally suggesting tasks for the future. Despite the constraints placed on Koreans during the period of Japanese colonial rule, for 28 years, Sotaesan managed to overcome obstacles to organize and create a system centering on Youngsan, Byeonsan, and Iksan while publically organizing an association in order to train youth and compile the main scriptures. Without wavering in the harsh conditions, Sotaesan laid down the groundwork for edification, placing priority on the fields of edification, education and charity. Among them, the most characteristic edification method of Won-Buddhism worth mentioning is precisely the ‘edification group.’ It is expected that the quantitative and qualitative conditions of edification will develop through the ten-member unit therefore in recent years the order has put forth efforts to run a ‘Retreat to Train Twenty thousand Edification Group Leaders.’ In addition, efforts have been made to organize a system, which develops edification that contributes to local residents and the local community. In other words, seeking joint edification by implementing an autonomous diocese as well as establishing a corporate branch. In order to expand the base of edification and diverge from temple-centered edification, there have been many new attempts to develop army edification, police force edification and so on. It is also worth noting that in October 2011, the first overseas headquarters, the Won Dharma Center, opened in the U.S. as a way to spur international edification. In the future, it will be extremely important to develop edification through appropriate scales and efforts that present methods to resolve societal issues based on the Won-Buddhist doctrine.
