원불교의 대안교육

국문 초록

원불교에서는 현재 영산성지고등학교, 원경고등학교, 경주화랑고등학교, 지평선고등학교, 한겨레고등학교 등 5개의 고등학교와 성지송학중학교, 헌산중학교, 지평선중학교, 한겨레중학교 등 4개의 중학교, 그리고 중ㆍ고 통합학교인 은혜학교까지 10개의 대안학교를 운영하고 있다. 이들 대안학교는 모두 교육당국이 학력을 인정해 주는 이른바 인가형 대안학교이다. 원불교의 대안교육 및 대안학교의 운영은 한국의 대안학교 역사에 있어 효시를 이룬다. 그렇다면 이러한 원불교 대안교육은 어떠한 사상적 배경을 토대로 형성되고 유지되고 있는 것일까? 본고에서는 원불교의 교리사상을 근간으로 원불교 대안교육이 사요의 ‘타자녀교육’을 중심으로 형성되고 있음을 밝힌다. 특히 사요의 정신이 일원상진리를 바탕으로 한 사은의 상즉성, 즉 없어서는 살 수 없는 관계인식을 토대로 형성되고 있다는 것을 강조하였으며, 이로부터 원불교의 대안교육이 사요의 정신인 ‘사회개혁’과 ‘소외’와 ‘차별’로부터 ‘치유’와 ‘회복’을 지향하는 교육의 방향을 견지하고 있다는 것을 분명히 하였다. 이와 같은 사상적 인식을 토대로 원불교 대안교육이 나아갈 방향에 대해 점검하였다. 그 중에서도 강조하고자 하는 것은 원불교의 대안교육은 대안학교의 범람과 더불어 대안교육의 보편화가 이루어지는 시점에서 대안교육을 또 하나의 경쟁수단으로 삼을 것이 아니라, 기존의 교육으로부터 소외된 이들에게 어떠한 교육평등의 기회를 부여할 것인가에 대해 점검하면서 대안교육의 미래적 방향을 설계해 가야 할 것임을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

Won-Buddhism currently operates and manages 5 high schools, 4 middle schools, and 10 alternative schools. Educational authorities acknowledge these alternative schools for their academic ability and thereby include them in the list of approved alternative education institutions. The operation of Won-Buddhism’s alternative education as well as alternative schools is the first of its kind in Korean alternative school history. This being the case, what kind of ideological background does it use as a foundation to develop and maintain this form of alternative education? This study uses Won-Buddhism’s doctrin althought as a basis to reveal that Won-Buddhism alternative schools develop by focusing on the section, “Educating Others’ Children” of The Four Essentials. Inparticular, this study emphasizes that the spirit of The Four Essentials has the Truth of Il-Won-Sang as its basis which is another expression of The Fourfold Grace. In other words, it is to consider the relationships that we relyon for our existence. Hereafter, it becomes clear that Won-Buddhism’s alternative education aims for an education that starts from The Four Essential’s spirit of ‘socialreform,’ ‘marginalization’ and ‘discrimination’ to ‘healing’ and ‘recovery.’ Through such ideological awareness, this study examines the direction of Won-Buddhist alternative education and argues that we should not use alternative education as a means of competition from the perspective of the flourishing along with the universalization of Won-Buddhist’s alternative education, but instead examine existing education and determine what kinds of opportunity for equal education we are going to give to those who are marginalized and then propose a plan for the future direction of alternative education.
