아우구스티누스의 신적조명과 신앙교육

국문 초록

아우구스티누스는 ‘빛’을 단순한 문학적 비유나 상징을 넘어서 교육과 신학의 핵심 개념으로 도입하여 그의 독창적 학설인 ‘신적 조명설(divine illumination)’을 제안하였다. 그의 대표적 교육관련 저술인 『교사론』에서 경험적 사실에 관한 앎을 ‘지식(scientia)’이라 하고, 영원 불변한 진리에 관한 앎을 ‘지혜(sapienzia)’라고 분류했다. 지혜의 교수학습은 실물을 보여주거나 기호와 언어로 이루어질 수 없음을 밝혔다. 영원불변한 보편적 진리는 모든 학습자의 내면에 이미 갖추어져 있다는 것이 플라톤과 아우구스티누스의 공통된 관점이다. 플라톤은 전생의 기억을 회상한다고 보았지만, 아우구스티누스는 전생을 부정하고 그 대신 하느님이 은총으로 빛을 비추어 학습자의 내면에 있는 진리를 기억해낸다고 하는 신적조명 교수학습론을 제시하였다. 한편 그의 신학사상은 『삼위일체론』에서 제시되었는바, 이와 교육사상의 연관성은 인식론을 매개로 이루어진다. 즉 하느님의 삼위일체가 인간 지성의 인식론적 삼중구조에 흔적으로 주어졌다는 그의 창의적 관점이다. 한편 ‘빛’과의 관계는 사물의 인식에서 ‘태양의 빛’이 있어야 하듯이 궁극적 진리를 인식하는 데에서도 ‘하느님의 빛’이 있기 때문에 가능하다는 것이다. 따라서 그는 하느님의 빛이 진리의 신앙적 측면이나 교수학습적 측면에서 은총으로 주어지기 때문에 가능하다는 신앙교육의 기본 원리를 신적조명설을 바탕으로 구축하였다. 이러한 논의를 기반으로 아우구스티누스가 제시한 ‘지혜교육’에서 신적조명의 의의를 현대사회의 신앙교육의 필요성에 비추어 고찰 하였다.

영문 초록

Augustine proposed his unique theory of ‘divine illumination’ as the central concept in his thoughts on education and theology, which was beyond the poetic metaphor or symbol of light. In his book on education, ｢De Magistro｣ he classified knowledge to two classes, namely, ‘wisdom (sapientia)’ on eternal immutable truth and ‘science (scientia)’ on sensational experiences. He demonstrated the impossibility of teaching wisdom with signs, words, or showing the materials. It was the common claims of both Platon and Augustine that the eternal immutable universal truths are already present in the inner mind of the learner. Platon argued that the learner recollected his knowledge of former lives, but Augustine did not admit past life. Instead, Augustine insisted that the learner remembered the truth in his inner mind thanks to the light illuminated by God’s grace. His theological thoughts were presented in ｢De Trinitate｣ and connected to his pedagogical thoughts via his epistemology. His originality was the observation of the structural similarity of the epistemological triplet of human reason to the trinity of God as an imprint. The relevance of light in the trinity was the metaphor of the Sun-light in the cognition of material objects : The recognition of the ultimate truth is possible due to the God’s light. He established principles of his faith-education through his theory on divine illumination which was given by the grace of God. We considered the significance of Augustine’s ‘wisdom-education’ with respect to the contemporary needs of faith-education.
