국문 초록

‘덕은 하나’라는 명제는 소크라테스의 윤리학 또는 도덕교육 이론을 구성하는 핵심 기둥 중 하나이다. 그럼에도 그 명제를 어떤 의미로 해석해야 하는지에 대한 탐구는, 적어도 그 명제가 가진 유명세에 비해서는, 상대적으로 깊이 있게 이루어지지 않은 편이다. 저명한 플라톤 연구가인 블라스토스(G. Vlastos)는 플라톤의 대화편 ｢프로타고라스｣를 중심으로 그 명제가 가진 의미를 분석하고 있다. 그에 의하면, ‘덕은 하나’라는 명제는 세 가지 주장으로 해석될 수 있다. 단일론, 유사론, 쌍조건론이 그것이다. 그가 보기에, 이 세 가지 주장 중에서 받아들일 만한 것은 쌍조건론이며, 단일론과 유사론은 쌍조건론과 관련하여 해석될 때만 의미있는 주장으로 간주될 수 있다. 그가 말하는 쌍조건론은 쌍조건문과 ‘바울의 서술어’의 결합으로 이루어져 있다. 쌍조건론에 의하면, 어떤 사람이 지식을 획득했다면, 그는 정의롭고 절제있고 경건하고 용기있고 지혜로운 사람이다. 블라스토스가 지지하는 이 쌍조건론은 ‘덕은 지식’이라거나, ‘덕은 지식이라는 점에서 하나’라는 식의 일반적 해석과 상통한다는 점에서 상당한 매력을 가지고 있다. 그러나 그 해석은 프로타고라스의 입장과 어떤 점에서 다른지 분명하지 않다. 블라스토스의 연구는 역설적으로 ‘바울의 서술어’가 아닌 플라톤의 철학 체계에 비추어 그 명제의 의미를 해석할 필요성을 열어준다.

영문 초록

The proposition ‘Virtue is one’ is one of the key pillars of Socrates’ ethics or moral education theory. Nevertheless, the investigation into the meaning of proposition is sufficiently fulfilled, at least compared to its reputation. G. Vlastos, a well-known researcher of Plato, is analyzing the meaning of the proposition, focusing on Plato’s dialogue Protagoras. According to him, the proposition that ‘Virtue is one’ can be interpreted in three ways: Unity thesis, similarity thesis, and biconditionality thesis. In his view, of these three thesis, the acceptable one is the biconditionality thesis, and the unity thesis and the similarity thesis can only be regarded as meaningful claims when interpreted in relation to the biconditionality thesis. According to the biconditionality thesis, if a person acquires knowledge, he is a just, temperate, pious, courageous, and wise person. This biconditionality thesis by G. Vlastos has considerable attractiveness in that it agrees with the general interpretation of ‘Virtue is knowledge’ or ‘Virtue is one in terms of knowledge’. However, it is not clear in what ways that interpretation differs from that of Protagoras, above all. G. Vlastos’ analysis paradoxically opens up the need to interpret the meaning of the proposition in the light of Plato’s philosophical system rather than ‘Pauline predication’.
