오컴 유명론의 의의: 이성과 자유

국문 초록

윌리엄 오컴은 중세의 종말을 고하고 근대의 문을 연 학자이다. 그는 유명론의 관점에서 보편적 믿음 및 계시의 영역과 이성 및 자연의 영역을 구분함으로써 신앙과 이성의 조화를 무너뜨렸다. 오컴은 학문이 신앙에 근거를 두지 않기 때문에 신학은 학문이 될 수 없다고 생각했다. 그는 신학적 사변은 어떠한 근거도 없으며 신학, 그리고 신에 대한 우리의 관계는 일차적으로 신앙에 토대를 둔다고 말한다. 이성은 더 이상 신앙을 지지하거나 확증할 수 없다는 것이다. 이성의 역할을 강조하던 종전의 신학에서 이성을 제거하고 그 위치에 신앙을 놓음으로써 신앙과 이성은 분리되고, 이해를 추구하는 신앙이라는 스콜라 철학의 전통은 막을 내리게 된다. 한편, 오컴은 객관적 사물, 물리적 세계를 관찰하고 탐구하는 데 이성 본연의 역할이 있다고 주장한다. 이성은 물리적 세계를 관찰하고 경험한 결과를 통해 검증된 사실에 비추어 사물의 세계를 설명해야 한다. 이는 인간의 이성적 활동이 철학에서 경험과학으로 방향을 전환한 것을 의미한다. 결과적으로 오컴의 유명론은 경험과학적 탐구를 고무시켰다. 또한 유명론은 개인의 권리와 자유의 개념을 강조함으로써 자유주의적 세속주의의 토대를 닦은 한편, 전통적인 희랍식 자유교육 이념의 약화를 초래하였다.

영문 초록

William Ockham is a scholar who marked the end of the Middle Ages and opened the door to the modern era. From the point of view of nominalism, he disrupted the harmony between faith and reason by distinguishing between the realms of universal faith and revelation and the realms of reason and nature. Ockham believed that theology could not be a science because science was not grounded in faith. He says that theological speculation has no basis and that theology, and our relationship to God, is primarily based on faith. By removing reason from the previous theology that emphasized the role of reason and putting faith in its place, faith and reason are separated, and the tradition of scholastic philosophy of faith seeking understanding comes to an end. On the other hand, Ockham argues that reason has a natural role in observing and exploring objective things and the physical world. Reason must explain the world of things in the light of facts verified through observations and experiences of the physical world. This means that human rational activity has changed its direction from philosophy to empirical science. Consequently, Ockham s nominalism inspired empirical inquiry. Nominalism also laid the foundation for liberal secularism by emphasizing the concepts of individual rights and freedoms. On the one hand, nominalism has weakened the traditional Greek philosophy of liberal education.
