한국 노인의 일자리참여와 자존감, 우울, 자살생각 간 관계연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 역할이론 (Lemon, Bengtson and Peterson, 1972) 및 활동이론 (Neuugarten, Havinghurst and Tobin, 1961)에 근거하여 고령인구의 생산 활동 참여가 노년기 정신건강에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 밝히는 데 목적을 둔다. 특히 계속 해서 심각한 사회문제로 대두되고 있는 노인 자살문제와 관련하여, 노인의 생산 활 동 참여가 자살과 어떠한 상관관계가 있는지, 그리고 특별히 정부의 일자리정책을 통해 생산 활동에 참여하는 노인의 정신건강상태는 어떠한지 검증하는 데 중점을 두었다. 이를 위해 보건복지부, 한국보건사회연구원, 서울대학교에서 구축한 제8차 한국복지패널 (horea welfare Panel) 조사자료 중 50세 이상 남녀 5 809 명이 최종분 석에 이용되었다. SPSS 12와 Themmes(2012)가 개발한 프로그램(통계 소프트웨 어 R과 접목하여 Propensity Score 을 도출하는 방식)을 통해 준 실험설계의 표본선 택편의를 최소화하기 위한 Propensity score Matching(PSM) 기법이 사용되었다. 분 석 결과, 첫째, 매칭 전 취업노인이 미취업 노인에 비해 통계적으로 유의미한 수준 의 높은 자존감, 낮은 우울감 및 낮은 자살생각을 보였으나, 매칭 후 자존감에서만 통계적으로 유의미한 수준의 차이를 보였다(t(3124)=6.713, p=<.001, d=.25). 둘 째, 매칭 전 정부의 일자리사업 참여노인이 비참여노인에 비해 평균적으로 자존감 이 높고, 우울감이 낮으며, 자살생각이 적은 것으로 나타났지만, 이는 통계적으로 유의미한 수준의 차이는 아니었다. 매칭 후, 노인 일자리 사업 참여노인은 비참여 노인에 비해 유의미한 높은 자존감을 보였다. (t(561)=-2.017, p=.044, d=20). 이와 같은 연구결과를 토대로, 생산 활동 참여가 정신건강에 긍정적 영향을 미칠 가능성에 대해 논하고, 향후 연구방향 및 정책 방향에 대해 몇 가지 제헌을 하였다.

영문 초록

Extremely high suicide rates among older people are one of the most serious problems in South Korea. The govemment has introduced employment projects for older people to secure income, encourage social activities, improve physical/psychological well-being, and eventually reduce suicide rates. In order to test the hypothetical expectation that employment of older adults would decrease mental health problems and suicide, this study aims to investigate the association between job participation of older people and suicidal indicators such as suicide ideation, depression and self-esteem. Data for this study was drawn from an annual South Korean nationwide survey called the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOVEPS). Secondary analysis was devised using propensity score matching (PSM) to provide more robust estimates. The results from the current study revealed two main findings: (1) the employed seniors are more likely to have higher self-esteem than the unemployed seniors (t(3124)=-6.713, p<.001, d=.25); and (2) participants in the government s employment programmes seem to have better self-esteem than nonparticipants (t(561)=-2 017, p=044, d= 20). There were no statistically significant differences in depression levels and suicide ideation between the employed and unemployed groups (or between participants and nonparticipants of the government s employment project)
