판소리 ‘정체확인형 사설’의 의미작용에 대한 인지적 접근 - <춘향가> 중 ‘어사또-춘향모 상봉’ 대목을 중심으로-

국문 초록

이 논문에서는 정체확인형 사설 대목의 의미작용 과정을 인지적 관점에서 분석해보았다. 대표적인 정체확인형 사설인 ‘춘향모-어사또 상봉’ 대목을 사례로, <춘향가>의 스토리세계의 구축에 기여하는 체험적 서사화, 스토리세계를 확장하는 과정으로서의 현장적 재맥락화라는 두 국면의 인지 공정으로 이를 나누어 살폈다. 그 결과 정체확인형 사설 대목의 수용자들은 스토리세계 내부/외부의 경계를 끊임없이 횡단하면서 서로 관련없어 보이는 사건·인물·상황들, 그리고 그에 관한 언어적·비언어적 표현요소들을 서로 연관짓고 조직화하고 구조화하면서 일관된 질서나 형상을 부여해 나간다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 이처럼 판소리 연행 과정에서 텍스트 자체에서 출발하는 상향식 인지와 텍스트 외부의 실제 경험과 사회문화적 기억과 담론의 장에서 출발하는 하향식 인지가 교차하면서 의미를 빚어냄을 살펴보는 일은 ‘서사성’의 개념을 새롭게 생각해보게 만든다. 정체확인 사설, 나아가 더 넓은 관점에서 판소리의 내러티브는 작중 누군가 어떠한 경험을 했다는 것에 대한 단순한 기술이 아니라, 그 경험이 어떻게 해석될 수 있으며 어떠한 의미를 갖는가를 탐색하는 사고과정을 담아낸다. 판소리 연구에 있어 이러한 관점의 변화는 수용자들의 적극적 개입(performance)을 유의미한 영역으로 끌고 들어올 수 있게 해준다는 점에서 유용성을 가진다. 인지서사학의 관점에 기반한 이 논문의 접근이 판소리 연구의 새로운 방법을 마련할 수 있기를 희망한다.

영문 초록

Pansori often involves parts in which the identity of important characters or objects is explored, and seeks to confirm its essence. This kind of Saseol has been referred to as an identity confirming Saseol. Previous studies on such Saseol have been mostly limited to analyzing Saseol itself, that is, the linguistic components of Pansori. The current study deals with Saseol as a comprehensive text including Pansori performance. This study illustrates how a text creates meaning and what is done in the process, that is, what is demonstrated through the overall semantic interaction of Pansori performance and Saseol. With such goals in mind, this study adopts a perspective based on cognitive narratology that focuses on the dynamics in the process of text reception as well as the conversational connections among cultural contexts, rather than just describing the static characteristics of a text. First, section 2 provides a detailed analysis of the famous identity confirming Saseol, Reunion of Chunhyang s Mother and the Secret Inspector, and presents a concrete observation of how expressive elements on the level of Saseol and the level of Pansori performance interact. The results revealed that while those participating in Pansori performance took interest in the contents of Saseol as well as how the inner narrative world is represented on the stage, they showed as much interest in and responded to the circumstances and contexts of the performance stage outside the narrative. Section 3 delineates such results in a systematic manner. The participants in Pansori performance constructed a psychological model of the inner narrative world through (1) foregrounding observational discourses and visual senses, (2) expanding conversational discourses and the movement of direct vision, and (3) the process of controlling dialog and inductive information. This study recontextualizes such a psychological model for the text world on the performance stage, and newly interprets it to identify new meaning. This study confirmed that the meaning of Pansori performance was constructed in the process where the recognition of the inner narrative world and that of the circumstantial context outside the narrative overlap and express themselves through various responses. This is in line with the concept of narrativity in cognitive narratology, where it is argued that instead of elaborate plots and compositions that are inherent in a text, the text recipient s experience and consciousness determines the narrativity. With such a novel view on narrativity, this study incorporated the recipients active involvement and cognition process into a part of Pansori studies, and consistently approached the narrativity of Pansori as total arts where Saseol, music, and physical movements are expressed in a comprehensive manner.
