국문 초록

영화는 ‘움직이는’ ‘시각예술’이다. 보는 행위, 보여지는 대상 즉 시각이미지를 인지하고 해석하는 것은 영상 이미지로 가득한 이 시대에 중요한 화두가 아닐 수 없다. 영화가 탄생하기까지는 고대부터 수많은 기술적 도구들의 방법과 시각적 방법들이 동원되었고, 영화의 탄생은 과학기술의 측면에서 뿐 아니라 시각예술 전반에 걸쳐 이미지의 보는 방식을 바꾸어 놓았다. 현대 사회의 시각적 형태의 다각적인 혼합에 대한 학제적 연구와 사회적, 역사적 과정에 대한 논의는 너무나 방대하고 다양하고 긴 역사를 가지고 있어서 한편의 논문으로 담을 수 있는 주제는 아니기에 본 논문에서는 ‘움직이는 이미지’를 중심으로 영화의 탄생과 미술, 사진과의 관계를 조망해 보고자 한다. ‘움직이는’ 이미지 재현의 의미와 변화를 사진과 미술에서의 ‘움직임’을 통해 살펴본다. 요약하면, 카메라 옵스큐라와 사진의 발명은 시각적 이미지를 고정시켰고, 이로써 카메라는 대상의 관찰을 기록한 유일한 수단이었던 회화를 대신하게 되었지만 당시 화가들은 오히려 사진을 그림을 그리기 위한 회화적 보조 수단으로 이용하였고, 인상주의자들은 스냅사진의 순간적 이미지의 포착을 이용하여 ‘움직임’과 동작을 작품에 담게 된것이다. 머이브리지와 마레이의 연속동작 사진과 크로노포토그래피를 통한 ‘움직임’에 대한 실험적 사진술이 어떻게 영화의 탄생에 직접적으로 영향을 끼쳤는지, 이들의 움직임에 대한 실험들이 직접적으로 속도와 시간을 담고자 한 미래주의자들에게 끼친 영향관계를 조명하였다. 사진의 발명과 미술에서의 움직이는 이미지에 대한 욕망은 영화의 탄생으로 움직임 자체를 재현해내게 되었고 미술에 있어서도 기계적 기술을 도입하여 예술과 기술공학을 결합한 키네틱아트는 실제의 시간과 현실 속에서 ‘움직임’이라는 새로운 사실주의를 예술작품으로 실현하게 되었다. 이 연구를 바탕으로 키네틱 아트의 직, 간접적인 영향을 받아 1990년대 이후의 전자시대를 대표하는 비디오 아트, 컴퓨터 아트, 홀로그래피 아트 등에서의 영상이미지와 영화자체의 다양한 담론들에 대한 논의는 향후 연구과제로 남겨둔다.

영문 초록

Films are ‘moving’ ‘visual art.’ The act of viewing, recognizing, and interpreting the object that is seen, i.e., the visual image, is an important topic in this day and age that is full of video images. Numerous technical tools and methods had been mobilized since ancient times before films were born, and the birth of films has changed the ways of viewing images not only in the aspect of science and technology but in the overall visual art. Interdisciplinary researches on the multilateral mixture of modern society’s visual forms and the discussions on their social and historical process are too vast and diverse and long in history to be dealt with in a piece of thesis, so in this thesis the relationships between the birth of films and art and photography, focusing on ‘moving images,’ are discussed. The meanings and changes of the reproduction of ‘moving’ images are examined through ‘movement’ in photography and art. To sum up, the inventions of camera obscura and photography fixed visual images, and camera took the place of painting which had been the only means of recording the observation of objects, but the painters in those days used photography as a means of assistance for painting, and the impressionists expressed ‘movement’ and motion in their works using the snapshot’s capture of momentary images. How the sequential pictures of Muybridge and Marei and the experimental photography on ‘movement’ through chronophotography directly influenced the birth of films and how the experiments on these movements influenced the futurists who tried to directly express speed and time were examined. With the birth of films, the invention of photography and the desires for moving images in art made it possible to reproduce movement itself, and kinetic art, which combines art with technological engineering by introducing mechanical technology, realized the new realism of real time and ‘movement’ of the real world into the works of art. Based on this research, discussions on the diverse discourses on the video images in video art, computer art, holography art that represent the electronic era after the 1990s, which was influenced directly and indirectly by the kinetic art, are left as the subject matter of future researches.
