국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 오늘날 미술교육의 새로운 패러다임으로 등장한 시각문화에 기초한 미술교육(visual culture art education)이 미술교과 교사교육의 방향에 대해 시사하는 바를 고찰하고자 하는 것이다. 구체적으로는, 서구의 미술 개념 및 미술교육의 패러다임 변화라는 맥락 안에서 우리 학교미술교육 및 미술교과 교사교육의 현주소를 고찰함으로써 이 시대가 필요로 하는 미술교사의 자질과 전문성이 무엇인지 논의하고 그러한 자질과 전문성을 길러줄 교사교육의 새로운 방향을 제시해보고자 하는 것이다. 우리 미술교육계는 국제사회의 미술교육 패러다임이 바뀔 때마다 직접 또는 간접적으로 그 영향을 받아왔으나 각 패러다임의 장점과 취지를 충분히 이해하고 현장으로 연결하지 못한 채 과거의 패러다임과 새로운 패러다임을 결합 또는 절충하는데 머물렀던 것으로 보인다. 이는 미술교과를 가르치는 교사들을 양성하는 교사교육기관의 역할 및 교육과정에 그 원인이 있다고 생각된다. 즉, 교사교육기관이 미술교과 교사들에게 새로운 패러다임이 요구하는 지식, 기술, 환경을 제공하지 못했기 때문이다. 이러한 관점에서 먼저 시각문화에 기초한 미술교육이 미술교과 교사들에게 요구하는 자질과 전문성을 제시하는 것이 중요하다. 그것은 다양한 시각적인 인공물과 현상의 의미를 해독하도록 돕는 시각적 문해력(visual literacy), 자신의 정체성 및 자신이 속한 문화에 대한 깊은 통찰력, 시각문화교육을 위한 교육실천력, 지식에 대한 다원주의적 관점과 수용적인 자세, 테크놀로지와 같은 다양한 매체와 방법에 대한 이해와 활용능력을 포함한다. 이러한 자질과 전문성을 신장시키기 위해서 교사교육기관은 시각문화교육 패러다임에 기초하여 미술교과 교사교육의 목표와 방향을 제시하여야하고, 교사교육과정 특히 미술 교과교육학의 내용에 시각문화를 필수요소로 포함시켜야하며, 교과교육 이론과 실습 및 현장과의 연계를 강화하고, 평가체제 안에 이러한 미술교육 패러다임이 반영하여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine paradigm shift towards Visual Culture Art Education (VCAE) and to suggest a new direction for art teacher education in this postmodern era. First of all, we have discussed changing concepts of art from traditional through postmodern social contexts and how this have been connected to paradigm shifts in our school art. Secondly, we have examined what teacher qualities and professionalism are according to the purposes of VCAE: (1) Visual literacy including abilities to understand formal and expressive characteristics of artworks and critical thinking skills; (2) Insight of the their own identities and their culture; (3) The ability to develop, use, and reconstruct art curriculum derived from students own cultural experiences; (4) Cognitive pluralism and openness to each student s learning styles; (5) The ability to understand and create newer visual technologies and various media. Finally, we have suggested new direction for art teacher education: (1) Set goals and direction for curriculum of art teacher education programs based on VCAE; (2) Visual culture should be included in their teacher education curriculum as content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge; (3) Various practical experiences should be included in art teacher education curriculum to use their students cultural experiences; (4) Keep providing preservice teachers with field trips or real experiences to connect theory and practice of visual culture; (5) Preservice art teachers knowledge of and ability to teach visual culture should be included in an assessment system of teacher education program.
