The Correlation between Brain Stimulation and Enhancement of English Language Proficiency: with Special Reference to Aromatherapy

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 아로마테라피를 활용하였을 때의 뇌 자극과 영어실력향상 사이의 상관 관계를 연구하는 것이다. 이 연구를 위해 세 가지 주요 연구가 수행되었고 표본은 총 80명으로 구성되었다. 연구1에서는 피험자의 뇌파측정 결과 아로마 흡입이 뇌기능을 자극함으로 뇌에 영향을 미치는 것이 나타났다. 연구2에서는 아로마테라피 후에 주의집중력테스트(ACAT)를 받은 실험군의 주의집중력 점수는 87.4330(SD, 20.38091) 인 반면 대조군은 58.8533(SD, 30.51460)으로 실험군과 대조군 사이에 유의한 차이를 보였다. 연구 3에서는 연구2의 동일한 실험군과 대조군이 듣기와 읽기/쓰기에 대한 영어실력 테스트를 받았다. 이후 실험군은 아로마테라피를 4주간 받고 다시 대조군과 함께 두 번째 영어실력 테스트를 받았다. 그 결과 실험군의 평균점수는 11.20(t=7.167, p = .000, p<.05) 상승되고 대조군은 3.80(t = 2.718, p = 0.011, p<.05) 상승됨으로 실험군과 대조군 사이에 유의한 차이를 보이며 실험군의 평균 점수가 대조군의 점수를 능가하였다. 이 연구 결과 아로마테라피로 뇌 기능을 자극하였을 경우 영어 실력 향상에 도움을 줄 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between brain stimulation and enhancement of English language proficiency with special reference to aromatherapy. Three main studies were done for this research. The sample of the study was composed of 80 subjects in total. In Study 1, subjects’ EEG readings showed that aroma inhalation did have an effect on the brain functions. In Study 2, the experimental group (Exp) with aromatherapy scored 87.4330 (SD, 20.38091), whereas the control group (CG) scored 58.8533 (SD, 30.51460) in the Attention-Concentration Ability Test, showing a significant difference between the two groups. In Study 3 the same Exp and CG from the Study 2 were given English proficiency tests on listening and reading/writing. Exp received aromatherapy for the next 4 weeks, and CG went without it. They took the second English proficiency test. Results indicated that the average score of the CG has increased by 3.80 (t = 2.718, p = 0.011, p<.05) while the Exp with aromatherapy increased by 11.20, (t=7.167, p = .000, p<.05) making a significant difference in favor of Exp. This study showed that aromatherapy stimulated brain functions, and it helped the enhancement of English language proficiency.
