국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 뉴욕의 9·11참사가 대중에 의해 만들어지는 지역공동체 미술활동의 장소로 기능하고 그 장소 <그라운드 제로>(2001)가 공공미술로서 보존되고 재현되는 것에 관하여 연구하였다. 참사현장은 공공미술로서 사회적, 문화적, 역사적 공동체 의식을 구현하고, 공공의 추모와 애도의 장소로서 의미와 가치를 지닌다. 9·11테러를 경험한 연구자의 공동체의식 변화와 대중들이 만든 행동주의적, 지역공동체 미술활동을 관찰하였고, 또한 미술교육자들의 미술과 미술교육활동을 통한 대응을 제시하였다. 공공미술로서 장소특정적 기념비로서의 마야 린의 작품 <베트남참전기념비>(1982)와 침몰한 타이타닉호를 기념한 영화 <타이타닉>(1997)을 사례로 제시하여 공동체의 추모와 애도의 기억과 기념하는 행위가 구체화/물질화된 사회적 미술의 공공미술과 시각문화를 통하여, 개인과 집단의 의식이 어떻게 미술로서 재현될 수 있는지를 비평하였다.

영문 초록

This study is about conservation and reproduction of communities’ commemoration, mourning, and historical memory. I brought Setember 11th Attack, the memorial place of Ground Zero observing the community’s public ritual action. The social, cultural, and historical place materialized the community’s memory of trauma and mourning. Through ethnographic research method, I would like to explain how an individual change her recognition of community as her own, observing the mass of September 11th and the site, as well as art educators’ activist art and art educational activities. The study will explain two other public art cases such as Maya Lin’s (1982), and the film (1997), presenting the ways they present the communities’ memory in terms of a monument and visual culture. Through this study I suggest how the communities’ experience of trauma materialized and expressed in site-specific public art, commemorational community-based art, and visual culture to develop humaneness for kindness, tolerance, compassion to built community.
