사의(寫意)와 사생(寫生) 개념 고찰

국문 초록

근대 한국화에 관한 담론에서 사의(寫意) 개념은 주로 사생(寫生) 개념의 상대적 관점에서 논의 되어왔다. 이는 ‘사의’를 주관적 의식의 표현이라고 보고, ‘사생’은 눈에 보이는 대상의 원래 모습을 그대로 표현한 것이라고 여기는 주관과 객관의 묘사라는 이분법적 생각에 기초하고 있다. 그러므로 이로부터 자연스럽게 사의와 사생 개념을 동양화의 남화(南畫)와 북화(北畫)의 대립구도로 치환하는 생각이 출현하기도 했다. 나아가 ‘사의’는 한국화의 추상 논의의 근거가 되어 근대기 심영섭, 김용준, 이태준 같은 아시아 우선주의의 입장에서 미술론을 전개한 이들에게 있어서 서양 미술에 대한 동양미술의 미적 우수성을 강조하는 논의의 출발점이 되기도 했다. 본고는 한국회화의 추상 논의의 출발점이 된 ‘사의’의 개념을 추적하고, 그와 상대적 관점에 서 있다고 여겨지는 ‘사생’ 개념이 ‘사의’의 상대적 개념이 아님을 논증하여, 한국회화의 추상논의가 처음 전제로부터 뒤틀린 명제 위에 서 있음을 밝히고, 이를 통해 미술의 본질 이해에 더욱 다가서고자 한다.

영문 초록

On the discourses of Modern Korean Painting, the concept of ‘XieYi(寫意)’ is mainly discussed in the concept of ‘XieSheng(寫生)’ in the relative perspective. It considers ‘XieYi(寫意)’ as an expression of subjective consciousness, and ‘XieSheng(寫生)’ as that of object itself as seen, that is grounded on the dichotomous distinction between subjectivity and objectivity. Thus, It is natural to appear on such ideas as the theoretical stronghold to crystallize the oppositional frame between ‘NanHua(南畵)’ and ‘BeiHua(北畵)’ in East Asia Paintings, originated from the concept of ‘XieYi(寫意)’ and ‘XieSheng(寫生)’. Furthermore, ‘XieYi(寫意)’ became a ground of disputes on abstraction of the Korean Painting, and departure point of emphasizing artist excellences of East Asia Arts over Western Arts from those who developed artistic theories on the East Asia supremacy of Arts over Western Arts such SimYoungSup, KimYoungJun, LeeTaeJoon in modern period of Korean history. In this article, I am pursuing the conceptual development process of ‘XieYi(寫意)’ that is a point of departure for the abstraction discussions in Korean Painting, logically demonstrating that the concept of ‘XieSheng(寫生)’, is not the relative concept of ‘XieYi(寫意)’, illuminating discussions on abstraction in Korean Painting which stand on the disjointed premises from the start, and finally clarifying the understanding of nature of the Art.
